What age do Guineas start to lay eggs???

I'm curious, MTtrout.... did they continue laying? Was that a 1-shot deal and they started acting like guineas later, or did they continue to mimic the chickens?

imbator - don't know what you chose to do abt. nesting boxes, but.... mine have a nesting shelf (w/ ledge to hold nesting material in) and a couple of divided spaces on one end for separate nests. Entire length is 4 feet. Orps usually lay in the shelf area, wyandottes in the individual nests...

    Dark green poop?

Not that I can think of. The only "special" thing they've gotten from me in the last couple of days was some sour raw milk, which they adore. They do free range during the day, but always in the same general areas, and nothing new seems to be growing. Maybe it IS one of the broodies.... It...

    Dark green poop?

thanks for the link.... I'd seen it but the green one they show is much less green, so I thought I'd ask here. It's a great resource though!

    Dark green poop?

Not sure whose poop, but I think (from size) it was the rooster. 12 hens and 1 roo, everyone acts normal. (3 broodies) Should I be worried? It's VERY green.

Are my Chicks to young to be put in the coop?

I think the feathers are key, more important gage than age. Speed of growth varies with variety and feed. I wouldn't put any out until they were well feathered - down doesn't provide much protection, and 2 weeks is still young.

Sponsored Post Help keep your chicks and family safe and healthy

I've been told that prior to antibiotics farmers fed their chickens raw milk to keep their GI tract healthy and avoid coccidiosis. Same general idea, I think..... the living enzymes in raw milk improve health. I feed my babies raw milk 2X a week, and my hens get all the soured raw milk - they...

Keeping Guineas away from the Chickens

Triplell... How old were your guineas? I'm wondering: maybe mine were harvested before they got aggressive? or maybe the French guineas aren't as aggressive as the regular ones?

Keeping Guineas away from the Chickens

Surprised by this thread and the common experience of guineas bullying chickens. Last fall I got a mixed flock of 50 Buff Orpington and Silver Laced Wyandotte chicks, and when they were 4 weeks I got a flock of 50 French Guineas. Both went outside at the same time - the chicks were 6 weeks...

    dying keets... ideas?

Just received a batch of 100 keets by mail. Everything seemed fine, then suddenly, NOT. One keet stretched out on its side, legs extended, stiff, but trembling convulsively when I picked her up. Stuffed her inside my shirt, tucked it in, and she recovered, slowly. Suddenly - about 18 of...

    Can chickens smell?

Humm. Given that I have the heat turned up high, am wearing layers (of clothes, not chickens) and am rescuing dying keets by stuffing them inside my shirt to warm them up.... I'm wondering how these birds will bond with me, LOL!

Good luck with them imabator! No one has laid an egg that big again, and I'm kind of glad! Have 7 Silver Laced Wyandottes and 5 Buff Orpingtons - both are sweet but the Orps are very tame. Both - and the Orp roo - fall all over my feet and squeeze between my legs to get to the feed when I bring...

Review by '' on item 'Orpington'

2 Buff Orp Hens got out sometime at the tail end of a big storm - foot of snow w/ up to 2 foot drifts. Glanced out the window and saw one pushing a path through the snow -- wind still high, temps abt 10 degrees, flurries. Ran out and got her, returned her to the pen - counted, and yep, another...

Best PVC Homemade Feeder, Super Easy!

there is a nipple waterer made w/ PVC pipe and a bucket here . I'd already gotten some nipples but hadn't puzzled through how I was going to use them - when I saw this picture on the link I went and got materials for the feeder and the waterer at the same time. I shopped at Menards in an...

    Chick starter protein

Good information, thanks. I'm not yet expert enough to mix things for my chicks, though I do a bit for my hens as supplement/snacks only. I hope to get there one of these days. Meanwhile they have layer mash in front of them all of the time. I only have 3 hens, a pullet and a rooster, so...

    Chick starter protein

Thanks Wildflower. I'm new to chickens, but have read extensively abt. nutrition from the whole foods perspective, so I thought it should be safe. But - hard to be certain that there isn't something negative that's species specific, so I really appreciate your feedback. I'd love to be able to...

    Chick starter protein

Wildflower, thanks for all of the detail on quinoa and comfrey - much appreciated! I recently had a couple of cups of quinoa w/ meal moths - not many bugs, but I wasn't about to eat it! I tossed it in a pan w/ some raw coconut and some bean flour (moths again!) and cooked it all up. I know...

How often do you change pine shavings in brooder?

I'm following the deep litter approach. Start with 1-2 inches, and just keep adding. If they smell, you're losing nitrogen into the air instead of capturing it for your garden, so add more. The chicks are always on the top, on clean litter. Underneath it begins composting - when it's time to...
