    Fox attack

A fox managed to get in to my hen house. It killed 2 young pullets, one is missing, so assume he took that one away with him. One other pullet was on the coop floor, and I thought she was dead, but she is indoors now and still alive. I have checked her over but can't find any injuries. She is...

    Jersey Giant x Le Bresse

I wanted to get a dual purpose breed, that would be a good size for meat and a decent egg layer. So I opted for jersey giants, and hatched 4 that turned out to be pullets. Then realised that they were slow maturing, so after a bit of reading, decided to hatch some le bresse as they are big and...

At what age/temprature can chicks live outside (and a couple other questions)

I put 2 week old outside with a brinsea eco glow as their source of heat. They spent the whole day out in their run, and only went under the heat at night. They feathered out super fast once I put them outside, within 1 week of going out, they were almost feathered out.

    Eggtopsy! What happened?

No temp spikes. Incubated in a brand new brinsea mini advanced. Temp was spot on according to the brinsea and 2 extra thermometers. I dry incubated for the first 18 days and then from lock down the humidity was at around 70%. It was alive and moving around at lockdown.

    Eggtopsy! What happened?

This was day 22, and I opened it up as it was clear that there was no movement what so ever.

What age to let chicks out?

I have 2 one week old chicks. At what age can I let them go outside for a while, and how long for? In the day time the temp has been 50/60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Gave broody 2 one week old chicks

I could not break my broody, so decided to give her 2 chicks that hatched 1 week ago. Initially it seemed to be going ok, for the first hour or so, she kept them tucked under her. Then 1 started to chirp madly, I went to check, and it was in a corner alone. I tried to put it back under her, but...

    Non hatched :(

Sorry that your hatch has not been successful. Another 21 days will be too much for your broody, health wise, so I would advise not to give more eggs.

    Eggtopsy! What happened?

[/IMG] This egg went into lockdown alive, almost 100% sure, as I saw it moving. Pumped up the humidity to 75%. It didn't hatch, so I checked it, and did the eggtopsy. What do you think happened?

Integrating broody and her 5 week chicks back to main flock?

When I started letting the broody free range with her chicks and the rest of the flock, she was challenged on several occasions, but no harm was done. But when the highest in the pecking order challenged her, she would run off, briefly forgetting about her chicks. It was during these times that...

Integrating broody and her 5 week chicks back to main flock?

Thank you for the advise. I have locked up the little coop and will see how they get on in the main coop.

Integrating broody and her 5 week chicks back to main flock?

Thank you for the responses. So how do I go about moving them back into the main coop? Should I just lock the mini coop and force them into having to go into the main coop? What is the best way for me to do this?

Integrating broody and her 5 week chicks back to main flock?

I I was worried about what the other hens would do to the chicks, and because I am not around for most of the day, I decided to play it safe and separate the broody. I read quite a few posts on here and it was a mix of opinions. Some were saying they separate for safety, others didn't...

Integrating broody and her 5 week chicks back to main flock?

I have a broody that I moved to her own mini coop to hatch some chicks. The chicks are 5 weeks old now and mostly all feathered. I have been letting my main flock and the broody with the chicks free range together for over a week now, without a problem. Would it be OK now to put the broody and...

    Spraddled legs?

Thank you for the link. I tried the elastic band mentioned on 1 of those posts and so far it seems ok. The chick is keeping the legs together better, but it's still not moving around hardly at all. I am concerned as it is not attempting to eat and drink by itself, I am having to dip it's beak in...
