    Had eye surgery-no painkillers given

My light sussex has just had her eye taken out at the vets. She has been given antibiotics (Denegard) but nothing for pain. I know chickens process pain differently but her tail and wing feathers are down, she is panting and her feet and face are very hot. She is obviously distressed but is this...

    Red Mites on Horses

My chickens are on a farm with stables nearby. They are always in their coops and runs unless I am cleaning them out. They then get to play out on a grassy bit where the horse boxes are. One of the horsey people is demanding I get rid of my chickens as she claims her horse has red mites from...

What went wrong with my butter?

I tried for the first time to make butter using a tub of double cream and a cake making machine. It turned butter like and seperated from the buttermilk but it still tasted like fresh cream, even when I added salt. Is it supposed to taste like this when it is homemade or am I tasting it more...

Flap of skin showing scull/ brains. Help

Firstly, please do not tell me to kill it. I have a 1 week old chick. I thought it had chicken poop on it's head so I tried to clean it with a baby wipe. A thick flap of skin lifted up and there was 'moist' stuff underneath. I don't know if it was skull or brains I saw. I have realised the black...

    Liver and Onions anyone?

I know chickens can eat everything (and usually shouldn't) but I was wondering. I have just got rid of an absolute plague of crawly, bitey things and remember that liver is good for iron and replacing blood cells. I have a batch of liver and onions in gravy at the back of the freezer. If I...

Are these some kind of egg clusters?

I was bathing my chickens as some have been loosing feathers and I have seen something that look the same as kids head lice on some of them. I decided to do all 60 of them. After doing 20 I noticed this on one of my Welsummers. Different to all the others so far. I should know, I have nit combed...

Lavender Gold Laced Wyandotte or Crele?

This is Samson. I have had him a while and always thought of him as a Lavender Gold Laced Wyandotte. I have recently heard about a colour called Crele and wondered if I should 're-brand' him?

Is it lower incubator temp for more pullets?

I am sure I read on here that if you want more pullet to roo ratio you have your incubator at a few degrees lower for the first 2 or 3 days. Can anyone confirm that or was it a wishful dream?

Call me silly but, what is this on my egg?

I have never come across this before. It is like crusty bits made up of tiny balls the same colour as the egg. Is it because it is only her second egg ever and she needs to adjust her settings or is it some kind of dietary deficiency?

    Anyone near Charm City Cakes?

I am in England and my 9 and 10 year old adore Duff Goldman and the team. They watch Ace of Cakes all the time and we have to record it so they can watch it over. My 10 year old has Autism and Aspergers and it is the only time he is quiet and sits still!! I emailed them and asked for their...

Using wing feathers to sex chicks

I found a video on youtube by chickenlover451. I put 'sexing chickens' in the search bar. They say you spread the wings out at 3 or 4 days old. If there is a single row it is a roo and a double row of feathers means a pullet. 1. Is this true? 2. Does it work for all breeds?

How do I get Mildew from coloured curtains?

Does anyone know of any old fashioned remedies to get mildew from coloured curtains? I can't use bleach because of the pattern (cream with red flowers on one set and the other set is lilac) and I have tried oxy action and washed them in the washer on a 40 degree wash. The black mould is still there.

Does Wry Neck (stargazing) reduce fertility?

My Light Sussex juvenile Rooster recently had wry neck. I got him through it and now we are best of friends. Of the hatch there are 3 roosters and 2 hens. I would like to sell the other roos and keep this one for the hens. Does wry neck reduce fertility or should I choose one of the other roos...

New born chick with bowel loop stuck outside

Please look at the pictures. They are a little fuzzy as it was close up and I was rushing but basically it looks like a chick was stuck to the egg by the sac and seemed to have pulled itself inside out!! I don't know, cos I was at work but I found it with the shell stuck to itself and a big loop...
