    Baby Chicks Tomorrow!

Well - I was just busting to share my "newborn" photos!! :) Forgot to say - sugar is for added calories. I just follow the McMurray new chick guide - I've had 4 shipments over the years from them, and it's always worked. Tractor Supply - well, they haven't been great on giving advice, but...

Countrywood Farm Cardboard Box And Shelving Unit

Very, very simple! I went to Petsmart and they gave me a big dog bed box - it already had a front cut out. I simply added a cut out door, hung a heat lamp from overhead, and then then made their "play yard." Their play yard is one box ($15) of shelving unit, double stacked, and then has a...

    Baby Chicks Tomorrow!

Well - the gro-gel and vitamins came from McMurray - I'm pretty sure Tractor Supply has the vitamins (powdered), but not sure about the gro-gel. It is this powder stuff that turns to bright green gel balls when you add water - it's like super-charged vitamins for them. I think you can actually...

    Baby Chicks Tomorrow!

I think you are not supposed to use cedar shavings in a brooder - only pine shavings. Double check (other people - please pipe in) - but I'm pretty sure pine only. Make sure you have paper towels to cover the bedding for the first 24 hours. Do you have a vitamin supplement (Quic Chic, I think...

What's a good price for DE Diatomaceous Earth

OT - I know the word for eating clay, chalk, etc - it's Pica. Here's the wikipedia definition: Pica is a medical disorder characterized by an appetite for substances largely non-nutritive (e.g., clay, coal, soil, feces, chalk, paper, soap, mucus, ash, gum etc.) or an abnormal appetite for some...

so sad - *graphic pix* has this chick been killed by a snake?

We just attached the coop to the chick yard - no going back, now. They are all together - so far, so good. Although my big hens are looking at the fence like what is that?! We are waiting for my toddler to fall asleep for her nap, and then we'll go finish it up. We've got chain link...

so sad - *graphic pix* has this chick been killed by a snake?

Yes, it is a wood pile. We've been meaning to burn it. Good idea - we'll burn it as soon as this rain stops here. I think we're going to join up the baby chicken pen and the big hen coop tomorrow morn. Tonight.... I'm not sure.... I think we'll put a flood light up and do some snake patrol.

so sad - *graphic pix* has this chick been killed by a snake?

Cleo is an Aracauna. And if that snake shows it's face again - it will no longer have a face!! I've been worried about putting the babies in with the big chickens, but I think that will be the lesser of the two evils right now. I'll leave the brooder in, so the babies will have a place to...

so sad - *graphic pix* has this chick been killed by a snake?

I am so upset. 2 weeks ago, and this morn, I've gone out to our baby chicks (6 weeks old) and found a dead chick. It looks like the head and neck had been swallowed, and then nothing else. We have a brooder inside a 10 by 30 foot chain link fence, with chicken wire on the bottom 18 inches...

    snakes!!!repelent???

I've used the snake stop around the barn before we got chickens - it has cedar, cinnamon and clove oil in it. I thought snakes smelled through their tongues?? I like the moth ball idea in a jug. We think a snake may have gotten one of our one month chicks yesterday. It was dead in the fully...
