I know silkies are difficult to sex, but it seems this one is easy. Is there any way possible that this isn't a cockerel? This bird is 4 months old. He's (?) about twice the size of our other silkie the other age who looks very pullet.
That's Annabelle in the foreground. Annabelle is 2 months old now. That comb didn't start until 6 weeks old. I know d'uccle roos normally get big combs early (I'm reading about 3 weeks), but I also know that pullets don't generally get red combs like that at all.
Roo, right? Like 100%?
Meet Ruby. Ruby is 5 weeks old today. 2 days ago "her" comb started to get a slight hint of pink. Uh-oh, we'd really like Ruby to be a pullet.
I know time will tell, but I'm not patient. What say you, sexers of d'uccles?
Hazel is our 15 week old silver laced wyandotte (above). I noticed she has some red lines streaking on her legs, and when I searched for info about that, I kept finding rooster related posts.
Penny was our 15 week old buff orpington who had to go live on a farm because he was not a Penny and...
We started coop construction this weekend. For the run, we're planning to make a 4x8 rectangle, with hardware cloth on all sides. The bottom of the run will be treated lumber, and we'll rest in all on the ground, putting ~2 inches of soil on top of the cloth on the bottom, and then...
We're new to all of this, and I have some questions. Please humor a rookie.
We currently have three 2 1/2 week old chicks in a brooder in the basement. It looks like our Buff Orpington is on the road to roosterhood, as it has a comb started, and there are some pink wattle buds coming in...
I'm putting together our shopping list for coop construction. I have a question about the run materials. We're using the hardware cloth. 1/4" square seems excessively small to me. If I go with 1/2 inch, will I regret it? Or is that still on the smaller side of norm, too?
Based on a lot of search result reading, I know it's too early to tell for sure. I know that BO's are hard to sex at this age.
I'm looking for some reassurance. Our Penny is 2 1/2 weeks old. She is the only BO we have, so I can't compare her to the others. She started a comb last week, and...
I've been reading this site for a year to gain chicken insight, and decided to join in on the fun.
Almost 2 weeks ago, we brought home our 3 new chicks. Alice is an Australorp, Hazel is a Silver Laced Wyandotte, and Penny is a Buff Orpington. See them over there <--? Awwww... My husband, 2...
