Hi all! Long time lurker here with a semi-emergency. I bought a fresh turkey from a local gentleman and it was covered with small feather stubbs. Pinfeathers, I think? Anyway, I've been pulling them out but about 1/2 of them are leaving about 1/4 inch long black marks under the skin. It...
One of the perks of having my pretty birds is the pretty feathers I find laying about. I've been wanting to do something crafty with them, but I'm not sure how to go about cleaning them first. And I must clean them, I'm just that way. Would a bath in a sink of mild soapy water ruin them? Any...

LOL, I suspect you're right on, there. My chickens free range in a field that also has 2 horses in it and they really seem to do a thorough job getting the seeds from the horse manure. They scratch and peck through it and spread the droppings all out. It's really kind of a neat...
I would think that fertilizer has long since dissolved and soaked into the soil and would be fine. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to put mine in there. Hth!
Thanks! I sound like a broken record at home, but I just can't stop telling my family how glad I am that they're mine now. Seeing each individual in their sad state was heartbreaking and rewarding all at once.
Thanks!!! My DH and I worked chickens yesterday, and it feels great for them to be on the road to healing. It was the first time I thoroughly handled each chicken, and as much annoyance and work this will be, I am soooo glad they're living with me where their health will be taken care of. I'm...
Hey all! I acquired 2 guineas with some laying hens I bought as kind of an "oh, yeah, you'll take the guineas, too, right??" deal. I think it's a male and female, from what I've read. And I think that the hen is laying eggs on the floor of my coop. Does that sound probable? A medium-sized...
No, not in quarantine. And I know better now, but what's done is done and I feel bad enough as it is, kay?
So, thanks for the lanolin advice. I understand I need to clean the whole coop, what I'm wondering is what is the most effective method.
So, a little background: I acquired a very diverse flock of chickens, about 35, (and two guineas) from someone who wanted to get rid of her whole flock. Mostly layers with a few roos, bantams, etc. thrown in. I also had 7 young chickens I raised from chicks this last spring. Let's just say...
I recently acquired a flock of 38 birds, mostly laying hens with a few pretties and roosters thrown in. I also had 6 pullets and 1 cockerel to start with. I know adding in adult birds w/o a quarantine isn't ideal, but it is what it is.
Anyway, I got them on Sunday and had 2 eggs in the...
My coop is pretty big. I've never measured, guess I'd say 9x12 as a lowball estimate. I live on a ranch and the coop's been there forever, but we're the first to raise chickens in a long time. Also, I let them freerange during the day and just lock them up at night.
Out of curiosity, why do...
whoops! He's a NHR, too.
Thank you for the welcomes and quick replies! I'm actually interested in having more purebreds, but trying not to break the bank on this little hobby....at this point, anyway. I keep almost ordering chicks, then telling myself to wait until spring.
Hi all, I've been lurking here for awhile and decided to jump in.
I have 6 hens and 1 hen who is actually a rooster. Just want my girls for laying purposes, but thought I'd keep the roo around unless he proves to be a nuisance. I was thinking about buying some more chicks this fall or next...
