One of my hens got round worm so I just gave a dose of Piperazine-52. It does not say anything about not being able to consume the eggs. What do you recommend?
I just put some diatomaceous earth in an old truck tire for our chickens. Our run is not covered. Will the D.E. be okay exposed to rain if I just want it as a dust bath for the girls? We used to have a spot by the house they used to be able to roll in but the coyotes swiped two so we can't let...
We just got new chicks a month ago. They are about 4 weeks old. Can you tell gender already? I am having a hard time even telling them apart, never mind the gender.
We have 2 Cuckoo Marans, 2 Welsummers, 1 Dominique and 1 Speckled Sussex.

I have a yolk eater in my crew. Usually first thing in the morning before I get out there. I have read on the forum to put dishsoap in an empty egg. I only have green right now. Can they see color? How long do you have to do it before they change their behavior typically.
I could have kicked myself because I just took a truckload of leaves to the community compost. I am dealing with a muddy run and looked up info on byc. I came across this thread and had to try it. Thanks for the tip. Good thing I had more raking to do. The girls enjoyed it this afternoon.
She is back into the group and no worse for wear. She still roosts on top of the bunny hutch at night and therefore needs to be taken to the coop every night. She is doing well. No eggs yeat and I think it probably won't happen until spring now.
The chickens squat because that is what they do when there is a rooster there to fertilize. That shows that they are ready or near ready from what I have heard. The best way to figure out who is laying is to catch them in the act. You have to check periodically when you see one of them go in...
Well I hope you liked Vancouver. We definitely do, however it snowed today. Unusual for it to happen this early. Snow has already melted from this morning, though. The hens didn't know what to think. They just wanted to stay in the coop but now they are out and about. Keep me in the know...
I know what you mean. Ours just started laying in early september. We have had them since they were just days old. I was getting very impatient. We have 5 out of our 6 laying now.
Lavender Update:
Lavender continues to do well and is healing quite nicely. She mingles with the other girls in the yard but I have tried to slowly introduce her back into the run and it is not working out well. One hen in particular is going after her. At night, she is welcome to go into the...
Mine were late layers too and it was because I was not giving them the right feed. Mine needed to have 18% protein to get them laying. Adding a light like a trouble light (used by mechanics) on a timer might help too. Our coop is on a timer and it comes on at 5am to 9am and again at 5pm and...
