Hello,
I've had my flock for about a year, and got my BO hen from the builder who sold me my coop. He didn't confirm her age, but I'm thinking she was at least a year old when I got her last June. She molted last fall, from October - December, and started laying again sometime during the...
Hello,
First, this is more of a "what do you think" post, than a breed specific post. If it belongs in another forum, plese feel free to move...
I am planning to add a few additional hens this spring and would like to include some white egg layers that will also add some additional...
I bought Kyle, my Red Star, as a started pullet and she began laying shortly afterward. In my mixed flock of 4 (BO, EE and SS), she has moved to the top of the pecking order. She is friendly (the only one who consistently comes to be picked up), a good forager and very rarely takes a break from...
I also have an EE and Speckled Sussex that are now 28 weeks old. My EE actually started laying today, but noting from the Sussex yet. From what I've read on this site, both tend to lay on the later side and can start anytime from 20 weeks to ???
There was a noticeable change in the size and...
Hi All,
I've only been keeping chickens since June and have 4 hens (EE, BO, Speckled Sussex and Red Star), most of which I bought as young birds, except for the Buff, who was given to me by the coop builder. My Red Star has been laying consistently since summer, and my BO has taken off for...
Hi All,
I'm still relatively new to this site and to keeping chickens, and currently have a mixed flock of 4 hens. I'm planning do do some expansion and add a few extra birds next year. I decided to get chickens primarily for egg laying, but looking at some of the hens (my speckled sussex in...
Hi Guys,
I have a small flock of 2 Buff Orpingtons, a Red Star and a newly added Speckled Sussex pullet. The other hens were already laying when I got them, and are between 7-9 months old. My Sussex just turned 15 weeks, and based on all that I've read, I'm hoping she'll start laying within the...
Question for all of you experienced folks...
I have 4 birds that are housed in a 4'x8 coop/run. I've only had them about a month and plan to build a small chicken tractor for my back lawn to let them do some scratching/rooting. We have a good buffer between our place and the neighbors on both...
Hi Guys,
Sorry for the late reply... I took everyones' advice and zip tied 1/2" hardware cloth around the entire coop and run, leaving only a 12" gap at the top. This should prevent anything from reaching in to grab them, even if they're sitting on the roosting bars. I feel much better...
I found the coop builder on craigslist in Northern NJ and rented a Uhaul to get it home. It was made by a small father-son business and they do really great quality work - solid and nice looking.
Acemario - Thanks for the comments, we are actually in the suburbs just 20 miles outside of...
Thanks for the comments - they definitely help.
On the beak trimming...it was not something I was planning on doing unless it was widely recommended. Thanks for confirming and for the welcome!
Hi Guys - Hopefully I'm posting this in the right forum...
I finally picked up my coop last weekend and am starting to get the chickens settled in. The coop is situated in a wooded area of the property that is on level ground, gets good ventilation and has a mix of sun and shade, and the birds...
