When should I intervene with a hatch? I'm afraid the membrane may be too dry.

Remember, as long as he has a good air hole in the membrane, chicks can live 2-3 days without food or water. So as long as you can see that there is movement/breathing, and it hasn't been that long, he is ok. And I notice while I was watching my chickies hatch that when the chick bumps up...

Eggs rocking around for 3 days but no peeps yet

I put 8 eggs in the incubator and so far have 4 chicks out in the brooder! One more has pipped and 3 have no activity yet. So at least a 50% hatch rate for my first hatch!

Eggs rocking around for 3 days but no peeps yet

Great! Thank you! I think it might take a few days longer because we were going by the digital thermometer and it is reading a full degree higher so I think we actually had the chicks at around 98.5 degree for days 10-17. Do you think they will still hatch ok?

Eggs rocking around for 3 days but no peeps yet

At about what day do the eggs start moving? And how long do they usually move for before pipping or peeping? We locked down on day 17 (on accident) and saw the eggs wobbling a little. It is now day 20 and the eggs are still wobbling but no peeping yet. Though it seems the eggs have somewhat...

Guide To Treating An Injured Chicken

This spring we found one of our chickens badly injured. We think it was a raccoon or a fox. Something had grabbed her back, just above the saddle area and dug claws into her. She escaped, but in doing so ripped a huge chunk of skin and meat off of her back! The wound started between her wings...

    Weird pimple on saddle area

They get oil out from there and spread it around their feathers. That's why she was "pecking" at it. It's also called the "preen gland" at least in ducks. :-)

Do sweaters actually help chickens stay warmer?

Well yeah, I would hope not to get hate responses, lol. All I asked was if anyone had experienced putting a sweater on a shivering chicken and had them stop shivering. I have not and do not plan to put sweaters on my chickens.

    Need pinless peepers?

Hey there! I just received some pinless peepers from Murray McMurray Hatchery. They are green. I received 25 since that was the smallest order but I only need a few. I am willing to mail these to small-flock owners that only need a couple if you don't mind covering the cost of postage. Or if you...

Do sweaters actually help chickens stay warmer?

I thought that too - the only exception I think, would be if you made them some sort of loose windbreaker maybe? I know that your coop needs to not have drafts, so chickens feathers probably aren't that wind-proof.

Do sweaters actually help chickens stay warmer?

I know some people have put sweaters on their chickens to keep them from getting pecked on. And some put them on in the cold weather - but does a shivering hen actually stop shivering if you put a warm sweater on her? Thanks!
