Hi, I’m looking for some advice on winter housing for Green Wing Teal.
I’ve had domestic ducks for years and I’m getting 2 pair of green wing teal next week. I live in Ontario Canada and our winters can be pretty cold and brutal. How well do the green wings do in the cold? I can build them a...
I have been searching for quite some time and I am having a hard time finding anyone in Ontario that has Emu chicks for sale. I'm hoping to get a couple this year if possible. Does anyone know of an Emu farm that will have chicks available this year?
Thanks Amiga! And yes, I do keep the heat light dusted off and I keep around my electrical outlets as dust-free as I can. I am very paranoid about fires in both my barn and duck house!
Here are a few pics of my duck house...It is 6'x8' and we insulated it since it gets pretty cold here in the winter. DH even ran power to it so I can plug in heated buckets for them and have light :) It was originally built for 4 pekins, but the flock has since expanded, so I think it is time...
I absolutely love my Welsh Harlequins! I drove over 4 hours to get them and I am so glad I did! It's too bad your drake wouldn't leave your ducklings alone...hope the little one's leg is healed? I have moved them out to a stall in the barn today for the first time and so far they seem to love...
I have the same fear that a big Pekin drake or multiple ones will gang up on the smaller girls. I am going to play it super safe and keep the young ones away for a while longer. I have integrated older ducks into my flock on two occasions already, so I at least have a pretty good idea how they...
Ugh, 3 months in the house!! But I guess when I think about it I am half way there. I do have a large dog crate that I picked up at a yard sale a few weeks back. It would be ok for a couple ducks, but I'm not sure I would want to cram all 4 of them in it for long. The divider I have for the...
Thanks Amiga, I think they are beautiful too I'm thinking what I might do since they are still too young is put them out in the barn in a stall during the day and bring them in at night, or since I do have a divider for the duckhouse, I guess for night time I could put them out in the...
I was just wondering what a safe age would be to introduce my 4 female Welsh Harlequins to the rest of the flock? They are 9 weeks old... and I am so ready to get them out of the house The flock I will be adding them to has 3 drakes and 6 females. They have met through the fence, and no one...
I'm so sorry to hear your little girl didn't make it. I just read through all the posts and you certainly did everything you could for her. I'm sure she knew how much she was loved
Lol, love the names :) They definitely aren't Pekins...they stand too upright and Pekins have yellow fuzz. I was thinking runners of some kind too, but I'm horrible at guessing breeds They are cute though regardless!
I'm no expert on niacin, but when I was doing my research into it I believe it was actually somewhere on this forum that I read that the reason you don't want the no flush niacin is that they can't absorb it properly. I was able to find Niacin tablets (which is vitamin B3 - Nicotinic Acid) at a...
I didn't know if my Pekins were boys or girls when I got them so I tried to pick gender neutral names...Quinn, Sydney, Sheldon (Shelly) and Gabriel (Gabby). Turned out Sydney was the only girl, so then I got Daisy, Daphne, Delilah, Sadie and Scooter :)
Good luck picking duckie names! You're...
You can either get brewers yeast from a health food store and sprinkle it on their food to up the niacin intake, or you can buy pills, or capsules and break them up and put them in their drinking water. You would be looking for Vitamin B3 (Nicotinic Acid) if you go the capsule route, and again...
I just realized I have been admiring everyone else's Pekins and haven't posted any pics of mine yet.
Here's 3 of my 4 Pekins at a day old....
and here they are at about 10 weeks.
We eat our duck eggs, from our Black Swedish ducks and find they don't taste much different than a chicken egg... I know if you overcook them they can go rubbery since they have less moisture in them then chicken eggs, but we fry and scramble them and they taste good! Oh, and they are awesome...
Yes, it is possible. I have 3 Black Swedish ducks and I have been getting 4-5 eggs a day from them, and this has been going on since the end of January!
Here's my Pekins at 3 days old....
and here they are now...(we rearranged the kitchen so they could come in for awhile on the -40C days and have a swim and warm up).
Mine just started laying last week and they are 8 months old. I was kind of surprised to find eggs since it is the middle of winter here and other than their heat light they don't get any artificial lighting I believe they can start laying around 5 months old if the lighting/season is right.
