    Broody Hatched a baby!

There could end up being 3, but one hatched last night! She's in a regular nesting box in our coop - what should I do now? Are they OK to stay there? (I have another broody beside her). The other laying hens usually try to get in that box to lay throughout the day, and I don't want the babe...

My first Broody - What is normal behaviour?

My Blue Maran hen has been sitting on eggs quite a bit over the last 2 weeks. She'll sit on the eggs but then seems to get up to let the other hens lay theirs. (It's the favourite nest of course.) We don't have a rooster, so we keep taking them all away from her. Last night she was still...

What colours would come from a Blue Splash Maran and Blue Wheaten Ameraucana cross?

My friend will be incubating some of her Blue Splash Maran's eggs fertilized by her Blue Wheaten Ameraucana roo to create an Olive Egger mix. I'm curious what colour chicks are possible from those genetics!

    Help sexing our Frizzle Cochin?

This little one will be 3 weeks old tomorrow. It's unsexed, but we wanted to take a chance and see if we could end up with a pullet because the frizzle is just so darn cute! I was told that cochins were easy to sex early, but I don't have any others as a reference. Any ideas?

    Is my lavender orpington frizzling??

We've noticed in the last few weeks that our 16 week old lavender orp Silvie's feather are not straight and smooth like our Buff (or any of our other birds). Is this a type of frizzling? Any thoughts? Sorry about the instagram iphone pics!

Raising Chicken in an urban lot? Wish you had farmland? This thread is for you!

I wanted to start a thread for all of us urban "farmers" who wish that they actually were on farmland! I wish that as a young, naive 24 year old I could have thought more about the long term, because darn it - real estate here was so cheap 8 years ago! Now with the inflation in real estate...

New Deep Litter coop - managing ammonia in a really damp climate?

Our coop is new as of October and we've had chickens out there since the beginning of November. We have 8 hens. The coop is 32sqft and 8 feet high. It has a window that is 6ftX2ft on the one side and then another vent above the door. It is SO damp this time of year in BC - it's hard for...

Picked up a new hen - nose bubble. Please advise!

I picked up 5 hens this morning and everything looked fine. We just got to the ferry and I noticed that the splash had a clear nose bubble. Eek! When it breathes, it's wattles are moving more than the others. It wasn't apparent when I picked it up. I just put a little bit of Timothy hay and...

    Do my pullets hate mash?

I had some organic buckwheat groats that needed to be used up, so I cooked them up today and mixed them with our layer mash, chopped up some apples and put it out for my pullets It's the first time that they've had a hot mash. The 3 EE's hopped over - took a few bites and then ran over to me...

    Landscaping over concrete?

We've lived in our home on a 1/3rd acre for almost 8 years now. Unfortunately the man who built the house LOVED concrete. Our driveway runs up, beside the house and then half of our backyard is a parking lot that we don't use. It's been handy for our daughter to learn to ride her bike, but...

What to use out in the run?

It is really, really wet right now! It rains here consistently from November-March and we have a brand new run. It was put in on dirt and I've spread a layer of sand in there, but it's turned to a muddle mess of puddles! Any ideas what we can use in the floor of the run to make it less messy...

What colour is this? Any idea of possible breed?

Little One is a 13 week old Easter Egger, who's Mom was a blue wheaten ameraucana. She was about a third of the size of all of our other chicks, and is still about half the size. I'm wondering what colour she would be considered, and if you have any idea what she could be crossed...

Polish Frizzle Pullet - Wanted BC

My husband is getting used to our chickens, and has expressed interest in a Polish Frizzle hen. I'd love to encourage any kind of interest that has to do with chickens! After our recent rooster heavy chick raising, I'd prefer to find a young, sexed pullet. I'm in coastal BC and feeling like...
