We just got done butchering 9 CX. The first 2 were a bit of a learning curve. We made a kill cone out of sheet metal.
Cut the vein in the neck and let it die.
We used a canning pot on the side burner from our grill to scald at 150 degrees. We fully cleaned out 2 birds and the rest I just...
Good to know. The last thing I want is them to die. The reds are all feathered out at this point, or 90% anyways. The CX are 90% or more feathered out. I'm gonna set them up out there after work. They will have a heat lamp where they can easily stay warm so I suspect things will work out fine.
Hi. My Cornish cross and production red chicks are 4 1/2 weeks old. I have had them in a pen in my basement and I have to say, my house STINKS. I setup a pen in my barn but I am concerned that it is too cold for them out there, even with the red heat lamps.
The overnight lows are in the...
Yesterday around noon or so, my wife found a dead Cornish rock. They are just over 1 week old. I was kind of sad about that. Although they wont be around long, at least they will get a change to experience some chicken activity and being outside somewhat before they go in the freezer.
I have...
This is a bigger enemy than the mice themselves. You'll never be rid of them if you cant get yourself to kill them. I have mice come around my barn from time to time. Its the last mistake they ever make...
Its a good chance they will die anyways. Crowing in my area is not an option. My house is spread apart from the neighbors by a hundred feet or more. There has been zero complaints about my chickens and I'm not gonna let a rooster change that.
We are planning on moving about a year from now...
I have been raising chickens for about 4-5 years for eggs. So far Ive kept only hens, as my neighbors are fine with that. But I just picked up 8 straight run chicks from tractor supply. Odds are, I will have at least 1 rooster if not more. More than likely I will either get rid of all but one...
If your near a tractor supply, chick days are coming soon. They have meat birds and egg layers. Its a good way to start out.
I've had chickens for about 4-5 years now. I live in a neighborhood where .5 acre yards are common, so the houses aren't too close together. Even here, the oldest one I...
Why not a move to a surrounding town with more land if you haven't moved there yet? If your looking to move, now is the time to look for property more suited to your needs. Moving to an area and trying to change laws isn't easy.
I have had backyard flocks for 4-almost 5 years now. My neighbors...
That's good info, thanks. I have had good luck with TSC chicks. So far I haven't received any roosters from them. But my co-worker has.
Good to know I will likely not have crowing issues with the meat birds. And If I get a rooster with the layers I will probably butcher it or give it a new home...
This is going to be my first spring raising meat birds. I have had laying chickens for about 4 years. We also grow a massive garden, so now we want to raise some of our own meat too.
I get most of my birds from tractor supply. So far I have been satisfied with them, so sometime next week when...
I can't stand people that complain when there is obviously no justifiable reason. Some people are miserable for one reason or another and because of that, they feel the urge to complain and make other people miserable too.
I'm sure the day will come when someone complains about me..... Anyways...
