    My idea for a coop

I'll probably be posting pictures in here ;). I'm so excited but I'm trying not to rush it since I'll need to just build it as money allows. Going to sell the extra bird cages that I don't need since building the aviary. I'm thinking since the roof would slope down below the fence I can create a...

    My idea for a coop

That's a great idea, however I do have a pair button quail in there, and after their lifespan is over I'd like to get Coturnix quail again. I can't have both structures connected either, because then it would count as one structure and anything over 120 sq ft I would need a permit for.

    My idea for a coop

I live in the city(Fresno, CA) and they don't technically allow chickens, however a lot of people have them anyway and the city doesn't really enforce it unless someone complains. I plan on talking to all of the neighbors immediately around us before we get them. I hear a rooster all the time...

Had to cull forthe first time today:(

Thanks! I felt like the whole thing just snowballed for no reason and I totally lost control of the situation. It was like she was trying to pick a fight, I was trying to defend myself and she was making be out to be the bad guy. She got hostile with me before I even got a chance to reply (I was...

Quail on Deep Litter - Why it Works

When the deep litter was new and fresh, it was fluffier, and easier for the eggs to get buried as they scratch. I started out with wood shavings and haven't replaced it in a year. It still doesn't look dirty and doesn't smell at all. I just stir it when it's starting to look poopy. They don't...

Had to cull forthe first time today:(

The two that were left the longest, from night til morning, are healthy. :) It's a large old ice chest so I have 2 waters(with rocks) and 3 lids with food. Chick starter is sprinkled on the shelf liner and I also have the auto feeder I'll be using when they get a little older. Three more have...

Had to cull forthe first time today:(

I didn't worry about the humidity too much at first too much because they weren't supposed to be hatching. Trying to keep it around 60-80% now since they started. Yeah he has a heat lamp and I wonder if they started incubating under it. I had to help 3 out of their shell, one is still alive and...

Had to cull forthe first time today:(

Got these free button quail eggs from the guy I bought my male from. He offered me eggs at that time so I called him when I decided to hatch. He just took me out to his aviary and told me to leave half a dozen or so. I got them on Monday the 21st. Set them that Wednesday. They started hatching...

Help my neighbor's dogs just killed my duck

Is there any way your neighbors can hear, either directly from you or "through the grapevine" that someone who lives nearby is going to start trapping dogs that come into their yard and take them directly to the pound? Maybe that way they'll get scared into securing their fence and you won't...

    all who are hatching quail

Just wanted to add I use puppy pads sprinkled with chick starter in the brooder. I've raised chicks on it before no problem so I think the incubation issues caused the splay leg.

    all who are hatching quail

Out of my 97 button quail eggs, I got them for free from someone I bought a button quail from before. He just keeps them in his aviary and told me to take as much as I wanted just leave a half dozen or so. None looked like they were in nests, so I did. Gathered 98 eggs(broke one) Monday before...

    Button quail for dog food?

Thanks buttonquailtx! I'm probably just going to stick to coturnix. I have 65 coturnix and 96 button eggs in the incubator right now. The Buttons will be sold as pets. Didn't realize it would take so many to feed all of my dogs. I'm really hoping someone with experience in feeding dogs raw will...

    Button quail for dog food?

Thanks, granny hatchet:) About going to the grocery store, if home raised meat is better for humans why wouldn't it be the same for our pets?

    Button quail for dog food?

I have 3 small dogs. This is something I've been curious about. Has anyone raised button quail for their pets, like for a raw food diet?

Quail on Deep Litter - Why it Works

That would be a great idea, except our lawn mower doesn't have a bag attached. I wish! :) I ended up losing two of those roosters. :( Thought because I lived in the city I didn't have to worry about predators, and I found out the hard way I was wrong. One disappeared and I just see feathers...

Quail on Deep Litter - Why it Works

Thanks! I think they're golden or a golden/manchurian mix. I forgot to say what's in there lol. I see how it looks like only hay. There's actually mostly composted leaves, aspen shavings, hay, oyster shell, and my birds food leftovers(seeds and pellets). The hay kind of floats on top while...
