We had 4 hens, now just 2.
I wrote a plea last year at this time when our consistant 4-eggs-a-day production dropped to 1-2/day. Shortly after (close to a year now) we're lucky to get 1-2 eggs a WEEK. The other day one of our girls was on the nest and I reached under and found a egg mess...
We have 4 hens that are a year and a half old.
We've been consistantly getting 4 eggs/day until one got broody, then they started molting mildly.
Lately we're lucky to get 1 egg/day...it's been like 3 months of 1-2/day. What's up???? They have layer pellets and plenty of water, safe raised...
We have some oil from a deep fryer that we would otherwise throw away when we replace our
fryer oil, but I was thinking that maybe the chickens would find it tasty atop some bread scraps.
I've researched to see if it is good for them or bad for them, with no luck.
Thoughts?
I assume they're fine to eat....we HAVE been eating them. They just look so odd.
She doesn't appear to be sick in any way; she's the top bird in the pecking order and
the only one who can figure out how to regularly get out of the fence.
Is there anything to be done?
Any ideas why I get eggs that look like they're moon eggs?
I have a 16-month old hen who lays these archaic looking dinosaur
eggs! They look like they're thick and layered, but they're actually
sometimes quite fragile at the tip. They're rough in texture as well
as being crusty looking...
I have 4 RIRs, about 8 months old. They, too are EATING MY HOUSE!!
At first I thought they were just finding moss or ants, but it's winter here in Maine, FREEZING and there's certainly no bugs around.
I sprayed some bitter apple spray for dogs...did not deter them a bit.
I knock on...
