Review by '' on item 'Add-A-Motor D20 Chicken Coop Motor'

This unit has had some bad reviews from people that may have not understood how to install it. The weight of the door may affect how long this unit will last. I would purchase this opener again.

Looks great and the chickens look happy. I really like the picture of the Dogs watching "Chicken TV"! My coop's starting concept was to be a tractor but wound up being on the heavy side after completion(4'x8'). I can still move it with 2x4s laying flat on the ground and galvanized pipe rollers...

Comment by 'coophead' in article 'Using Sand In Your Chicken Coop'

I used sand in my brood pen when raising our girls. The floor of the pen was 1/2" hardware cloth with a layer of rosin paper laid over it and up the sides a couple inches to prevent the sand from falling through. This was easy to keep clean and worked quite well. I made a poop scoop from a piece...

Why are some of my hens laying and others not?

Good point! I have observed the same hens in the nesting boxes, one RIR which has a little darker egg than the Buffs. Even though the same breed look very much alike, there are noticeable differences in their appearance and personalities. There are the same, one darker egg and two lighter...

Why are some of my hens laying and others not?

Thanks Chickencanoe, You are probably right. They are getting pretty red and I guess I'm being a little impacient. Hopefully they will lay soon. I would threaten them with the soup pot but I don't think they understand english and I'lm still learning how to speak proper chicken. Love my girls!

    When do chickens lay?

Quote: Our RIR rooster does the same thing. I worry about his mental health sometimes. It seems like he has to be the loudest thing going on at any one time. Doesn't matter if your cutting grass with the mower or just making normal everyday work noises, he has to be heard. I love chickens!!

Why are some of my hens laying and others not?

We have a total of six hens, two R.I.Reds and four Buff Orpengtons and a RIR rooster. They are all the same age, about 26 weeks, same size and appear to be very healthy. I let them free range during the day and are cooped at night. I feed them layer feed in their feeders and give them scatch...
