    2 good cats

I have two 9yo felines, 1 male, 1 female, in need of a home. They're both fixed and healthy. They are very lovable and have quite the personality. The female is a slim, feisty little thing, about 4-5lbs. The tom is lanky and bigger, 12lbs+. Neither is overweight and both are very pleasant...

    Michigan ducks

Hey all. I'm in need of re-homing 3 ducks here in Gaylord Michigan. They're all around 7 mos old; 2 hens, 1 drake. The hens are a Pekin and Rouen, while the drake is a Khaki. They're used to people, but obviously run if you try to grab them. They all know their names and actually come from the...

    Odd duck hen behavior?

I know...they are just doing what they do. I just don't like how they both gang up on the Pekin. The Rouen always initiates it. The Pekin doesn't defend herself much. She's the largest too(obviously). I wonder if the white feathers are the cause?

    Odd duck hen behavior?

I have 3 ducks; a Rouen, Pekin and Khaki. The Rou and Pek are females, the Khaki is a handsome drake. The females are irritating to me with their constant loud chatter and need to vocalize all the time(their loud mouths drew a red fox in). The big problem I'm having, is the Rouen mounting the...

    Ducks out of water?

At the moment, my 3 ducks have two larger cat litter pans that get filled with water 3x a day. They get in them and splash, as well as drink. They seem fine. You definitely want water for obvious reasons(to live lol), but also so they don't choke. Ducks will fill up a mouthful, then waddle over...

    Male or female

It should have drake curls coming in at 10 wks; my Khaki did. Keep an eye out for them. Hens make loud quacks and this deeper, shuddering noise. Drakes make a lower, raspy sound that's hard to describe. You'll know the difference once you've heard both.

    Raising ducks with chickens

I'd separate them, as ducks are considerably messier than chickens. Ducks often grab a mouthful or two of feed, then walk over and wash it down with water. Ducks are much easier on a lawn, as they don't scratch like chickers do. They both have their pros and cons. If you never intended to...

When do pekin ducks develop a drake feather?

Since Pekins develop and grow so quick, I'd imagine maybe a month or two? My Khaki drake developed his a bit after 2 mos.

Ducks not getting in coop at night

I do the herding with a long stick routine...otherwise my quackers will stay out all night. I didn't know about putting the coop in a corner, but had already located it in one. They do indeed walk circles if it's central or there is no blockade to stop them. As soon as I come walking with that...

    Confusing RR behavior

Maybe sulky wasn't a good word to use. She'll sometimes just not be running around active like usual, but I imagine even chickens can have moods like us. Maybe she just wants to hang for a bit...she seems to be fine. She was getting fired up today, like usual, when our BR in an adjacent pen came...

    Confusing RR behavior

She certainly isn't thin by any means...lol. She's a thick, solid hen. Very well proportioned. She's in the house making the putting sounds a laying hen does as we speak, but there will be no egg when she comes out. Like I said, she has laid before, just not in awhile. She acts and seems very...

    Confusing RR behavior

I have a year old RR hen, that hasn't laid since late February or so. She's solid and healthy body-wise, eats and drinks and poops regularly...yet, can't seem to make it happen? She'll go in and lay on a nest like she's going to, but nothing is ever there. I felt for egg-boundness, and nothing...

    Curious

So one of our EE' s feet seems to have discolored over the winter. It's just pinkish, almost like the green regressed. She acts and feeds normal, laid 3 straight days recently and shows no ill effects. Could this be from walking in snow or scratching on icy/snowy ground? Her other foot is...

    Sad morning in Michigan

Lost our SLW this morning. She was fine and active yesterday, but dead this morning. I am so bummed. I know it's "just a chicken", but I don't care. She was one of my babies and I'm so mad at myself. I don't know what happened for sure, as her body showed no signs of anything, aside from two...

Wintering Chickens, Not good for us this year.

This is my first winter with birds as well, but I have not had a problem. I live in northern Michigan, which is similar to MN in winter(not quite as cold because of the GLs). My birds are fed and watered 3-4x a day. I give them standard crumble, seeds, oatmeal, cracked corn, bread and spinach...

    Snow

They're indifferent to it at times, but eventually realize it is what it is. I shovel a portion of their run as best I can. They eat it for hydration if they need to, and seem confused if they fly and land right in it...lol. These photos are from right before Christmas, as I haven't taken any...

How cold is TOO cold for a chicken?

I'm continually amazed by how many people keep insisting on heat lamps, despite constant assurances on the lack of need. When people from Alaska, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Dakotas and the like are not using them, that should tell you right there! When you have cold hardy breeds, you...

Any suggestions on how to solve our frostbite problem?

Our birds are snow eaters too, which is cool if we can't get to their water change for awhile. Chickens are quite adaptable and hardy when the right specie is chosen. Our birds are all doing well.

    Impossible intergration?

Can chickens just not be feasible to intergrate at times? We have one pen with 2 birds, BR and SLW and another with 3 birds, RR and 2 EE's. They've been visible to each other for months now, yet are still temperamental towards each other. The main culprits are the RR and SLW, but our BR does it...
