I had chickens for 2 years...they quit laying and my health took a downturn...so closed up shop, so to speak....Well,....Now my health is improved and I wanna try my luck at raising some quail for a change.
Should I order chicks, or try to start with eggs?? I have never incubatored any...
My chickens slowed down egg production last winter...that was expected... it was a very harsh 3-4 months.
Then spring came and they were laying back to 80-90%...About then, we noticed our roos were wearing out the hens.....many of my hens were ridden so much they lost feathers on the...
This is the 3rd coon we have trapped in a week !!! .....this is getting expensive, gas wise, taking each of our 'captors' into the forest far from people with chickens .....we live in the edge of the Mark Twain Nat' Forest. We drive back about 6-8 miles and turn them loose in a creek...
This was in a near by towns paper this morning !! Yay !!
When you think of backyards in Springfield, you probably don't think of chickens, but that could change now that city leaders passed an ordinance allowing people to keep up to six hens within city limits.
The move did not come without...
We jsut experienced a very extreme cold spell....egg production dropped each day till there are NO eggs in the nest today ?!!! Why would all my hens know to quit laying at once and when will they begin again? Did the bitter cold effect them that much??? Weather is improving and temps are goin...
....since I had my first taste of homegrown fresh chicken! Been butchering and eating my own chickens since the summer.Anyone else feel this way?

I really botched up today butching one of my poor roos. My cone was too small, so I tried to remove his head quickly with my sharp knife....BUT, I could not cut thru the feathers on his neck !!!
I felt like he was suffering so badly and I felt terrible, as I was literally sawing at his neck...
I have 5 Dominicker hens along with 15 other assorted hens and 3 roosters. All my dominickers are getting bald spots on their back sides ...does this mean I have too many roos riding the hens?? The dom rooster seems to only mate with the dom hens so they are getting quite a workout from him each...
I butchered my first bird awhile back ...a roo...very lean meat. Yesterday I had to cull an injured hen and when I did I found her to be full of fat!! It was bright yellow fat and all thru her body. I removed it as best I could, but wondered if this is normal ? Does this mean I feed my girls...

OUR weather here in SW MO has been extremely wet this month! Usually when the weather is very wet, I keep adding straw to my 16x16 run ....so my poor chickens wont have to walk around with wet feet all the time...but after 3 bales of hay in less then a week, I realized that I cant keep up...
OK..I feed my 8 month old chickens egg pellets, corn scratch, table scraps, veggies, etc......
I supplement with oyster shell.
The egg pellets are supposed to have all the calcium they need , according to the guy at the feed store. Is the oyster shell all the grit they need?? Is oyster shell...

My hubby came home tell me this and sure enough...it worked??!!!! But anyone else heard this before ?? Just wondered....I will post a picture in a sec....
Hubby and I were out in the yard yesterday working, real close to the coop and run. My chickens were all ( 24 ) out in the run, content and happy, and it was a normal day...till

They all...
I raised my 25 chickens since they were delivered at one day old from Cackle Hatchery on April 1. So, I pretty much bonded with them as chicks. I held and loved on them constantly, carried them around with me alot.
....But as they grew bigger, heavier and more independent...I have not had as...
My 21 hens are all exactly 23 weeks old....I have Buff O, Leghorns, Dom, Americanua's and RIR. All of my hens are now laying, except for the Amer. Have been since about 20 weeks. Are the Amer. slower to lay ? I keep looking for that green or blue egg and my patience is about exhausted !! I...
I noticed my hens often appear to pant when they are sittin in the nexting box?? Does that mean they are laboring as they expel the egg? Today is not a hot day at all...in the mid 60* s...so heat would not be a factor. None of the others are panting either. So can I assume my girls are...
Here I was sitting here just now.... reading Predators and Pest..... and I hear my little dog barking her '' intruder'' alarm. I look out and see a good sized lab across the road. Never have seen this dog before, so it appears my neighbors may have gotten a new dog.
So before any problems...
