    Breed and gender??

I was wondering if anyone could help identify the breed and gender of the darker chicken. I am hoping for a nice hen.

what do you all do to keep your birds from being too bored all winter?what do you feed for treats?

I found that filling the run with leaves and small amount of shaving mix changed their lives. They love scratching and foraging all day. I throw food out under the leaves so that they find something tastey. I hung a few CDs-about head high- with fishing line from the roof of the run and they...

    making my waterer heated?

Some have tried a small fish tank heater, but I wouldn't trust the girls to not break it. You could also try one of the bird bath heaters or spinners (to keep the water constantly moving so that it doesn't freeze). It may be worth it to just get one of the base heaters or a heated watering unit...

Do I need heat lamp in coop with the cold weather???

I was also concerned about the severely cold temperatures and on the fence about using a heat lamp for my full grown reds. Understanding the concept of heat and moisture I decided to wait it out and see how the girls acted in the cold. They have a nicely built house and have plenty of draft free...

To Wash or Not To Wash, that is the questions....

I think that reading any community driven forum is enough to drive anyone mad with paranoia. For every post that tells you to do something there are at least an equal number of posts telling you not to do the same thing. After several years of interest and desire to raise chickens, I decided...

keeping chickens cool in summer heat

It was fairly hot a few days here last week and I took a deep storage bin lid and filled it with water. I had read that chickens like to stand in water and experience cooling through their feet. At first they ran over to the lid and stared at it for while as if it is was going to jump up and...

WEIRD or ODD Eggs pics!!!! :)

I have also been reading up on "When do chickens lay eggs" posts and articles and very anxious receive eggs. I too thought that the day would never come. My hens are 16 1/2 weeks and I received my first full egg this afternoon. She was in the coop moaning like it was the end of the world. When...

    Chickens - Pets Or Slaves

I think like many, I am a slave to my chickens. They are more pets, or rather part of the family at this point. I am always looking out for their well being and provide them a clean, healthy and happy environment. I check on them early every morning, throughout the day and check on them when it...

Do you play favorites? Admit it....it's OK....I won't tell the others....

I am the same way. People think that I am crazy because I spend a lot of time with the chickens and hand feeding them their treats. They really do become like pets and all have their own personalities. My two favorites-

Do you play favorites? Admit it....it's OK....I won't tell the others....

I have two favorites. They get the extra attention and treats. One stands behind me when I am giving them mealworms, blueberries, cantaloupe or other treats. She tugs at my pant leg when she is ready for another.

Great flock and pictures! They all looks beautiful. I have a flock of 8 Reds. There were supposed to be 8 pullets, but it turned to be 7 hens and 1 Roo.

The coop looks excellent!! I have been contemplating switching to sand for the floor of my coop. I have been using PDZ on the shelf under the perches and love it!

    My chickens LOVE cantaloupe!

I bought a large cantaloupe the other day and took a few cut up pieces out to the coop. Once they had a taste they instantly went into a frenzy. They get more excited when they see cantaloupe than they do mealworms (those that feed their flock mealworms know how excited they get for those treats).

hen laying on her right side / wing

It was definitely a shocking site and as I had mentioned paranoia set in. It is the one of the first warm/sunny days that we've had this season and now I do realize that they were enjoying themselves in the dirt and sun. I went out there with some of their favorite treats (live mealworms) and...

hen laying on her right side / wing

I am glad that I found this post. With all the posts and discussion on Marek's I was a bit concerned when I saw two of my flock "lounging on their sides". I had freshened the run this morning and they were lounging near each other in a pile of dirt on their sides in the sunny part of the run. I...

Thank you! I really enjoy it and so does the flock. I set it back in the woods to both give me a place to escape to and relax as well as keep them further away from any neighbors and the house.

Great article! The pictures were very helpful. I had purchase 3000 a couple of weeks ago with the intention of starting a farm. The chickens absolutely love them. It is a frenzy when I feed them some. This was my first go round and I guess that I had some pupae and didn't even realize it.
