So, hope to get some good advice. I've raised chickens for 3 years, and have always wanted to hatch some.
I started by buying from a feed store, graduated to ordering from a hatchery, and now I'm graduating to hatching my own.
Bought a brand new GQF 1588, with the turner and digital...
So, what do ya'll think about this?
Would you ever use a GM chicken in your back yard?
Why or why not?

No idea if this is already on BYC. (and yes, I'm too lazy to check!)
My mom typed this up for me today, and I found the information at the bottom excellent!
Try it and let me know what you think.

I had 3 of my 15 hens start sneezing. Some sounded a little raspy. One was also pretty lethargic. No runny noses, no swelling of eyes.
So, I quickly seperated them to a different pen. The one perked up fine the next day and after 3 or 4 days they all stopped sneezing. The rest of the flock...
I've often wondered about storing eggs long term.
I've hear about freezing and oiling them to make them last, but I never knew how to powder them.
I ran across this on the internet. Has anyone ever tried to powder their eggs?

I must have one or two hens that have a problem. I frequently get blood, or meat spots in my eggs.
I know that bloodspots are "caused by the rupture of a blood vessel on the yolk surface during formation of the egg or by a similar accident in the wall of the oviduct" and that less than 1% of all...

I was looking for the chart that shows how much food a day old chicken will eat, until it is 20-weeks old, and ready to lay. (I've since found my answer. ~20 pounds to 20 weeks of...
Hi,
I got my fuzzy butts today. I confirmed with the hatchery before we got them that it was a pullet only order.
But, it looks like half of them have black patches on their head. Some breads that means Male vs. Female.
How about Delawares? Did I get half roos?

I've got 16 birds currently, and 1000 sq feet of run space. I'm doubling the amount of birds I have, and can double (maybe even triple) the amount of run space for all of the birds.
If I have (approx) 35 birds and (approx) 3000 square feet of run space, is it ~STILL~ going to look like a desert...
Ive been doing a lot of searching on what to buy for my next breed of chicken. But, I couldnt find a comprehensive list (that I could sort), so I made my own!
Dont get me wrong, Hendersons Chicken chart is awesome. But, it just wont sort and has tons more information than I need.

He's a good looking bird, and I'm not complaining. But we live in an urban envornment and the first time he crows, he's going to freezer camp.
He was born Oct 15th, and is about 12 weeks old now. I had read they crow around 10 weeks old, but in another post it's months later.

Since straight run is fine with meat birds, which is more economically, buying day olds from a hatchery/farm, or buying fertile eggs?
You have postage with day-olds (and to a lesser extent, fertile eggs too)
You've got the non-hath rate, but then you may have DOA day-olds
What is everyone's...
So, Ive often thought about having a big chicken & egg business
(You know, when the economy goes bad (worse?), the food supply goes kaput, and I lose my real job )
Anyway,
I wanted to be able to tell my customers why my little flock of back yard chickens produces better eggs than the store...
"Midnight" our first time mamma black australorp, got off of her eggs at times for 2+ hours in the last 3 weeks.
When I put her back on, I felt the eggs, which were cold. It's been 23 days. I was going to give up and boot her off the eggs tonight and get her back to laying eggs.
My boy just...
I also have a few questions.
"Midnight" our only black australorp, now has 13 buff orpington eggs under her.
I built out an extra 4x3 part of the coop for her, but she would have nothing to do with the eggs and a new nest box. So back in the old nest box she went. Then I chicken-wired off part...
Hi, I'm a first timer hatching eggs. I've got a broody australorp that I want to try and set. I'm looking for up to a dozen Buff Orpington or Barred Plymouth Rock eggs. (not mixed breeds please)... We're in Utah.
Any help for a noob at hatching?
Marty
I've got a black Austalorp who's gone broody. She's been that way for about 4 days now. I don't have a rooster. I have a friend at work who has some 'mutt' chicken eggs, but I'm not sure I want mutts... I think I'd like to do Buff Opringtons.
We're in Utah. Winter hits mid November. The chicks...
