Just an update to explain our drop off the face of the internet and end of this thread.
My husband was killed shortly after my last post.
We lost everything. Our home, farm, animals, everything.
We haven’t been ready to start over for the past few years, but now we can’t wait to find a new home...
We just love watching the chicks hatch.
It never gets old. If ever there's a chance to watch a chick hatch out, the kids and I are right there watching and cheering the little chickie on LOL
It has been interesting to read this thread. Such a variety of breeds and egg setting numbers :)
I couldn't get a hold of any more Barnevelder eggs here in Australia, so I only set 31 Australorp eggs for this month's hatch on the 16th of March. Due to hatch on the 4th April.

Hello all.
It has been a very busy couple of months here. I haven't had much of a chance to hop on the computer and update our story.
So as you know, we tried three hatches over the months of December and early January. I thought I'd give a quick recap, to save anybody having to go back and...
Look at all these grown chickies!! Time flies doesn't it.
It's great to see this thread going and people updating with pictures of their little flocks.
I'll try and get on the laptop in the next week and upload a few of my own. Been so very busy lately.

Can you apply 'boots' after a week? Or is it too late by then?
I only just got a chance to closely inspect all of my chicks and noticed one has a couple crooked curly toes.
I've had a few chicks hatch with one 'problem' or another that suggest too low a humidity, so I suspect the dry incubation...
It's a possibility. I have since found out that there are more than one type of cocci and not all chicks show blood in their poo.
I plan to find out if our local ag department offer necropsies at all.
Yep, totally creepy. We moved away before the restraining order ran out and didn't update our address, to avoid being found again.
The accident was my almost 5yo with too much affectionate love for the chickie. I walked off to do something quickly and didn't supervise properly. Loved to death...
White runny diarrhoea, fluffed up feathers, sulking in a corner, lowered appetite, lameness in one side followed at the end with gasping breaths and then death :(
I used to have a problem with an ex, who killed 30 of my rabbits and guinea pigs many years ago over the course of a month or so. He cut hutches open with pliers, let animals out and put the dogs in the rabbit shed, I assume to make it look like the dogs had busted in to kill them.
There are...
Does anybody ferment grains (not processed feed) for their chicks?
I'm looking to confirm my current recipe as I'm starting to lose chicks and just want to ensure it's not their feed. I doubt it, because they are 4 weeks old now but just want to get opinions on my mix.
I currently ferment a...
