Hen with raw spot on her abdomen

No sign of mites or other bugs. There are more feathers missing further forward, but not so far forward as her keel, only to between her legs. Maybe it's how she's resting? I've noticed that our girls like to sleep in the nesting boxes rather than on their perch, one per box unless it's very...

Hen with raw spot on her abdomen

Here she is in action. You can barely see the area that is bald. Today the raw spot has scabbed over. She and the others had a nice wander around our yard!

Hen with raw spot on her abdomen

I'll take a better look tomorrow. By the time I could give this much attention, it was dark out. I can try and get a picture too.

Hen with raw spot on her abdomen

Eggcessive, I dusted for mites in October (we had another hen die-unknown causes-and saw mites on her when we found her), and haven't seen any sign since. I suspect it might be boredom. The pen isn't excessively large and though they were content in it last winter, our weather has been unusually...

Hen with raw spot on her abdomen

I have a hen who is about 19 months old who has a raw-looking spot on her abdomen, just below her vent. Her vent looks normal and she is behaving normally, eating, pooing, scratching, competing for treats. I had noticed last week that she seemed to be missing some feathers in that area and today...

Pumpkin seeds? Feed them pumpkin seeds? How does that work?

For the new folks that haven't experienced a molt yet.

Thanks for sharing! Yesterday my daughter and I dusted our girls for mites (for the first time ever) and our girl Tiny was shedding feathers like crazy. We figured she was beginning a molt (they're going into their second fall and we haven't seen an obvious molt yet. Now I know not to freak if...

    Hen not eating or active

Thanks to all of you for your advice. I think the dose I'd been giving of Corid has been too low. I'm upping it to 1-1/2 tsp per gallon. Yogurt to follow up will be easy. hat's one of their favorite treats! One more question: would worms show up in their poo? I haven't seen any evidence of that...

    Hen not eating or active

She sounds exactly like one of mine whom I think has coccidiosis. I've been treating my whole bunch of 6 with Corid since Saturday and while she doesn't seem any worse, she doesn't seem any better. I, too will be watching this post for more help!

    flying chickies

We have a chicken tractor and 6 chickens, young hens. We've always let them roam in the yard, but needed to be out keeping an eye on them because our lot is only about a half acre and they want to wander to the neighbor's yards. Yesterday my husband brought home some portable fencing to give...

My Orpington is sleeping in new nesting box!

I have 6 chickens and 6 nesting boxes. I've found that they all tend to sleep in 3 of the boxes and then lay in the other 3. Is there any harm in letting them sleep in the boxes?

What treat did your chickies get today?

Piphens7: I'm in the middle part of Michigan (near Flint if you'd like to look at the map). We get temps anywhere from the 32F which is your 0 to our zero. I'm not sure what that translates to in Celcius, but it's pretty cold! Fortunately, it usually doesn't stay there for long. We will get...

What treat did your chickies get today?

piphens7-Your 10 is probably Celsius, right? Our 90 was Farenheit. Back to a comfortable 75 today and the hens got leftover corn on the cob and basil!

What treat did your chickies get today?

Record heat here (Michigan) yesterday and 90 degrees expected today, so I froze some watermelon rinds for them that I'll give out throughout the day. Love the grape and strawberry stories! My girls will follow you anywhere for a grape too!

    Layer feed

I mixed finisher and layer half and half at about that time. and was instructed at the feed store to then go to entirely layer feed. I think our first started laying at around 18-20 weeks and the rest have followed. I am new this spring too. Good luck!
