When a chicken lays an egg it is covered in a natural coating called bloom. Bloom is a natural way to keep bacteria from entering through the shell into the egg. Unless the egg is dirty, I do not wash my eggs. If I do have an egg that is dirty, I gently clean the debris away with a sponge.

Last year I kept a light going on very cold nights. I used my red heat lamp light that I normally use with the brooder box. I hung it above the area where there water was and it kept the water from freezing as well.

While they are young they may skip a day while laying. But they will surely let you know when they have laid an egg! Mine get quite noisy after laying!
