    Chicken Vampire

Samantha is one year old, she is either a Cochin or a Brahma and was previously a docile featherbrained bird. She has started being broody and worst of all she actually pecks at our legs and then drinks the blood. I have added all sorts of extras to the food in case it is a vitamin deficiency...

Review by '' on item 'Ameraucana'

My Ameraucana is the favorite among friends and family with her reddish brown coloring and more stream-lined game-style body build. She is the most inquisitive of the flock and seeks independent investigations instead of following the apha hen. My Ameraucana could fly well and I had to learn to...

Urban gal here so can only have three birds and no roos. My Barred Rock is my most friendly hen and alpha at the same time. Must be picked up first and if the others are held too long has to jump up and settle in on the shoulder or arm. My friends in the area believe their Barred Rocks to...

On Mother's Day 2013, I treated myself to three pullets and finally threw away the Organic Gardening magazine from the 80's with the article about the Benefits of Backyard Chickens. As a child, my sister and I always got those colored chicks for the holiday, loved on them until they went to...

    Alternatives to wood shavings?

Have you used cedar chips? It dries quickly and also works to keep many bugs away too. Since we live in the hot south, my coop is more open and shredded paper collects too much moisture in the open areas. I use shredded paper only in the laying boxes.

Do you play favorites? Admit it....it's OK....I won't tell the others....

Two of my birds are in competition for my 'favorite' status. Cosette, the Barred Rock, will probably be the most missed of the flock. Top hen of the flock, not mean, just in charge and very protective. She defended her sibling, Samantha, seen in the background, from a Red-Tailed Hawk and ended...
