    Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I have a question, do the crested birds have vaulted skulls like silkies and polish?

    Over drinking?

I checked the first as we're already managing a chicken with ascites(we self-drain her when she needs it as she is still happy). Also, I am sure it is bumblefoot she went to the vet for it, and we have had to open it up since the main infection was treated. It becomes blister like at times and...

    Over drinking?

Thank you, tonight I will remove food and water and check her in the morning. Hopefully, it is a clog or just her wanting to over drink liquids since I haven't pinpointed any other odd behavior. I will also try the swatting. Though I dunno if it will work with Lulu. I might need to bring her...

    My poor chicken Teeny

I would isolate her until she gets stronger, I use a dog pen outside to reintroduce my hens if I have to isolate them inside. You could do this for Teeny too so she can still see the flock, just make sure something is thrown over the top of the pen so she is protected from any flock members that...

    Over drinking?

I have a hen(Jet) who has been drinking way too much lately and I can't work out why? Other than possible boredom as she has been inside for a while because of her having bumblefoot and needs TLC away from my other two because my little brat of a bantam has freaked out a few times when the Jet...

    Head tick/twitch in hen?

I have a hen that has a head tick/twitch, at first we thought it was related to her getting sick/lack of food in her system because of medication because it resolved with feeding her mashed up hardboiled egg. She was very fussy about food while in she was on antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory...

    people with house chickens

Thank you for the info I'll look into it. As much as I like silkies I'm leary over the vaulteed skulls but maybe they might have some that don't have them. Does anyone knew about Maran's I know the local feed store is getting a bunch in on the 9th and I have no idea how friendly and aggressive...

    people with house chickens

If I can find a female I'd love to have a silkie I had a part silkie baby roo for awhile until he had a serious health issue. I think getting a silkie would also mean finding a line that didn't have a vaulted skull which caused Topaz's issues. Any other recs?

    Ascites/Fluid Filled Body?

3-year-old Barred Plymouth Rock who had other(minor) issues in the past. I honestly think it isn't just genetics we had a serious fire here in the bay area. We've had the following with health issues since the fire a lizard, horses, dogs and a fish. On top of a friend dying from getting sick...

    people with house chickens

In the long run, Lulu found a very reasonable place to lay even though it wasn't in the nice wood nesting box I got her. She is currently most often laying them under a chair pushed up against the wall in the kitchen that gives her a nice hidden feeling near where we keep the chicken feed. I...

    Ascites/Fluid Filled Body?

Thank you for your frankness about it. Currently, she seems happy enough and improving for now so we'll just do it day by day for now.

    Ascites/Fluid Filled Body?

One of my 3-year-old hens is suffering from fluid-filling her body. The vet said this is likely related to either a tumor or an issue with a heart or liver. He did say there is an infection and we're treating her for it. Has anyone had a chicken recover from this? The vet said this likely...

Soybean meal in chicken feed - good or bad

Personally, I avoid it because you don't know how an individual in your flock will react to it. It has to be highly processed for chicken consumption too. I can see it being fine for chickens that get lots of healthy scraps and other food free ranging. But I'd rather be safe then sorry since...

Impacted crop, on all 3 hens HELP!

I recommend giving coconut oil daily. This worked with my hen who got an impacted crop, I gave it to her then messaged the crop a bit to work it into whatever was stuck in it. Feeding yogurt is a good idea also if you can get probiotics I would put that in their water. If they go off their...

    Squarking hen

Hens can and will crow, I have a bantam Phoenix hen that crows pretty much every day. I don't see a rooster in the video so I am guessing you down own one. A hen will take on a roosters 'job' if one isn't around. Lulu my bantam isn't the first hen I have had crow, I had a Wyandotte hen who did...

    Well, My Capon Crowed Today

My two-year-old, Bantam Phoenix hen that crows... also he sure doesn't look like a rooster would look at that age. He seems more fluffy then the roosters I have known at his age. But all animals have things hardwired into them, so one capon might crow and another might not. I have a gelding who...

You know you're a backyard chicken owner when...

When the rescue who was supposed to be inside just for isolation has made herself at home and has shown no real desire to move outside and you kind of are allowing it since she is an adorable bantam and you have easy clean floors, and simply put towels where she tends to sit on the furniture.

Paper feed bags or bulk feed?

My new organic feed by Bar ALE comes in a paper bag. No idea if this helps since the feed seems to only be available in California, Oregon and also Nevada. EDIT: I would call your local feed stores and find out how thing come package. I am sure how things are bagged varies too.

You know you're a backyard chicken owner when...

When you are rather sure the chickens are trying to talk to you. I have had a hen that would say something that sounded like 'no' and walk away if you asked a question at times. Also, my current rescue who is living isolated inside screams 'MAMA' when I leave the room.
