I've got one, she's 14 weeks and from what I've learned, they tend to grow faster than other breeds. Does that mean I can expect her to start laying sooner than later?
They came out of Hoover's Hatchery in Iowa. It's a hybrid "breed" but not a true Marans. The birds tend to be big and faster developing so I am hoping she is quicker to lay.
Any hope for this one being a hen? Supposed to be sex-linked but this one sure has a red comb and waddles.
The other calico princess pictured on the left of photos is 11 weeks old.
This is what Hoover’s has on their site. I’m not sure if all three of these are Sapphire Gems, but the comb is different on the right and the left one does have some copper coloring.
I ordered one sapphire gem (along with a prairie bluebell Egger and some others) and got two gray birds that looked similar at hatch but now look quite different. I’m thinking the one with the copper colored chest could be my sapphire gem and maybe the bearded one is the prairie bluebell Egger...
i placed a 2nd chick order because my first order was missing the brown leghorn. It’s looking like my second batch is missing it too. I’ll post pictures of 5 weeks old and day old, but what is it? Came from Hoover’s Hatchery
This is where the older chicks sleep at night and I don’t know if it’s safe to put the babies in their with them at night. I don’t know that it’s big enough for two sets of food, water, and heating pads and 8 birds.
So I have five chicks that are 3 1/2 weeks old. I have three chicks that are about four days old. I need some advice on how to put them together. I did OK at first, but then I noticed the little ones all huddled into a corner all the big ones had free reign of whatever they wanted. I have two...
Thanks. Started well but I noticed the 5 bigger ones hogging all the heat and shooing the 3 little ones away. I’ll have to figure out something else. They’re back apart.
