AniMed Blue Lotion - Did I make a mistake????

Did I just make a horrible mistake? I have a hen who the Roo made pretty naked in spots. I thought the other hens had been picking so I separated her for a bit. I thought I'd put Blue Kote on the red areas, but none of our local stores had it, so I went to MFA and was sold this. I didn't read...

Pretty sure ive got them sexed right...

Barnyard mix, 11 weeks old...pullet on the left, cockrell on the right? Again, cockrell pic? I'd really love 2 pullets... 😞 One more...same "fella".

    NOT egg bound, penguin stance.

My 11 month old hen is standing and walking like a penguin. I noticed it yesterday but was preoccupied and it was more of a "that's odd"...today it's even more pronounced and I remembered reading about it. I have a picture 2 days old when she was fine. I've googled it and as best I can tell...

Broody or hiding from the rooster?

I have the strangest behavior from one of my hens. I only have 3 (Eenie, Meanie, and Sheba) l plus my rooster (Manny). He has been pretty amorous. One girl (Sheba) has bald spots over her wings and Eenie's back is looking pretty ragged. Eenie has taken to staying in the nest box all the time...

    Just feeding whatever...

I can't find the answer, so... I've not gotten a single brand of food and stuck with it. For a while we fed grower, then we switched to layer pellets when the chickens were older, but paid no attention to brand. I normally get food from a local feed store. It's Purina layer pellets. But if I...

Match the egg to the hen!

My three girls last distinctly different eggs. Brown, khaki greenish-tan, and blue-green. Here are the suspects...all mixed breeds. Eenie. My smallest lady, with no truly distinguishing features. But she's sweet. I suspect she's the khaki layer. Meanie. She has the look of an Easter...

    Oh my! Rooster kills owner!

My big brother loves to tease me about, well, everything. He sent me this today. https://www.foxnews.com/world/irish-rooster-violent-past-kills-man-attack-back-leg-court

    Direction of raised bed

I've lived in shade for years but finally have a large sunny yard. I'm going to start small with a long, raised bed, say 8x3. Should I run it east-west or north south? That is to say, what directions should the short ends point?

Does it take a while for combs to turn red?

Yesterday I noticed my black hen's comb wasn't as red as the other chickens. She's about 8 months old, I'd guess. They just started laying in the last two weeks. When she was little her comb was nearly black. As of last November I have a pic where it was still gray. Will it eventually turn...

Laying in front of the pop door

My girls seem to have decided they MUST lay by the waterer next to the pop door. This morning, my husband brought me two eggs, apparently laid last night, because I just got 3 more! They previously were squeezing in between the water and wall, so I filled it with wood. Husband found the two...

Our first dozen - on the floor. 🤔

Took 8 days, but my 3 girls gave us a dozen eggs. At least, 2 of the 3...I'm pretty sure one isn't laying, based totally on the appearance of the eggs. All 3 hens look totally different from each other. Now if they'd lay in the nice nest boxes, instead of the poopy coop floor. I've pot golf...

Nest boxes and feeders - about time!

With two hens laying, I HAD to get this done! Now if they use them, instead of the floor, we'll be golden. Figured while we were at it, we'd put in the feeders we've been planning . Was happy to find the litter was dry all the way thru - our roof fix was successful!

Two laying, but no nest boxes yet! Oops!

Two eggs today! While im doing a happy dance that two of my girls are doing their job, I have one nest box on the floor in a corner of the coop, and it's ignored. (Cant say I blame them; it's not very good.) They are laying on the floor. I intend to put in better, more private nesting boxes...

    I GOT AN EGG!

One of my girls became a grown up hen today! :yesss: Not sure which one and it was in the middle of the floor, but it's a start! This weekend, a much better nest box will be installed. I'm so proud! <wipes a tear>

Extreme temp drop. Am i prepared?

I know its been asked a thousand times, but i want to make sure I've done what I can. It's going to drop into single digits and negatives for a couple days at the end of this week. Right now it's from the 20s to 30s. I had a roof leak in the coop, which I think we've fixed. The litter is damp...

Deep bedding on concrete is damp

My coop, which is inside another shed, has a concrete floor and I've made the bedding quite deep; about 6 to 8 inched of straw and pine shavings in about equal parts. It's huge for 4 chickens - nearly 50 square feet, has plenty of ventilation, and doesn't smell at all. Theyve been in since the...

Trying to guess at a mixed breed pullet

My chickens are mutts. The farmer who gave me them had lots of miscellaneous chickens just all together and wouldn't hazard a guess. But one just is so different. Meanie is rather round and short necked compared to the others and has a feathery face. What does that tell you with respect to...

Do i need to move lawn clippings out of the run?

About 4 weeks ago, my husband dumped a huge pile (5'+ diameter) of yard clippings from our 2 acre yard right where the chicken run will be (because I told him i wanted to start a compost pile near the coop, duh). Top is dry, but there weren't any browns mixed in for proper composting and I'm...

Any gender guesses on my mutt-chickens?

I'm fairly sure the red ones are female, less sure about the black and white...especially the white. Not sure of their age...12 to 16 weeks? Totally mutts. The farmer couldn't even guess. Thanks!!!

    In a pullet pile...

So I got these girls August 22. They were just well feathered out, about 8 weeks old. We had a tiny coop, 4x4 and about 2 feet high. They didn't seem too mind, but they were little. Sometimes they slept in it and sometimes they slept in the run, huddled together. We just got them in the big...
