What the heck!?! 24 chicks dead- Any ideas appreciated

Probably just their feet if anything. It was low to the ground. One was hanging on the fence and this one was short and long on the ground.

What the heck!?! 24 chicks dead- Any ideas appreciated

Thanks for the info! I don't think the feed got wet because it was sealed in a container and when I put it in the feeder it was under a plywood "roof". When you mentioned botulism I thought that was associated with flies/maggots. A little research later and it seems like the wet soil and maggots...

What the heck!?! 24 chicks dead- Any ideas appreciated

I called the hatchery and they think it could've been coccidiosis caused by a variance in temperature with the heat lamp at night and sun during the day. I'm skeptical of that because like I said it's pretty warm during the days I've had them out there (85-90 degrees) and with the heat lamp in...

What the heck!?! 24 chicks dead- Any ideas appreciated

So I ordered 30 Welsummer chicks from Cackle Hatchery on May 7th. Had a few die the first few days in the brooder box but 24 were very healthy (5 cockerels, 19 pullets at this point). Raised them 2 weeks in brooder box, then moved them outside this third week into a simple cage with chicken...

    The Serpents Have Been Arrested!

Finally got this rascal. Swallowed ceramic eggs every other day or so but always spit them out. Got him over 2 guinea eggs. Hung him on the fence and in the past two days we've gotten over 7 inches of rain in some parts- seems like it works more often than not!

    Benefits of Certain Farm Animals

Great answer. I ask the folks I know who have geese, turkeys, and ducks what they have em for and they always respond they like having em around or the kids like em, something like that. If I got any it'd be for good eatin'!

    Benefits of Certain Farm Animals

Haha! That's a good one! Not naming your food is always a good idea. I'm sure they make good pets and are real interesting to have around. Guess I see it that I have enough to do already, what return on investment am I getting from them? Luckily I married a country girl. She's right there with...

People Who Are Famous Who Shouldn't Be

That's true. Anytime I hear a rap song in somebody's car at a red light or see them "singing" on tv I think those guys have more money than I'll ever see in a lifetime and for what? A bunch of noise. This truly is the land of opportunity

    Benefits of Certain Farm Animals

Yeah definitely, sheep are great. Most people around here have Barbadoes. Sheep and pigs aren't something I'm after but both seem really useful.

    Benefits of Certain Farm Animals

I've got goats, guineas, 40+ chickens, and hopefully cattle one day. But I'm wondering what's the benefit of animals like rabbits, ducks, turkeys, geese, etc.. A rabbit I can see being a pet project for a child, like graduating from goldfish to hamster to rabbit. Or I guess you can show rabbits...

Can Guinea Fowls be left at a rural setting without people there all the time?

Yeah they definitely love to wander. Mine range about 3 acres but they know where home is and are always close. I would think they'd sooner need to be in the coop at the location than starting them at your home and moving it but that's just my guess. Yeah a 6 ft fence is nothing to a guinea. I...

People Who Are Famous Who Shouldn't Be

Had this conversation before about how I can't believe how some people are rich and famous (Singers, Actors, Athletes, whoever). Figured the folks on here would have some good ones. I can think of many but for starters, how and why is Justin Bieber rich and famous? Feel free to add yours

Can Guinea Fowls be left at a rural setting without people there all the time?

I think they'd be fine. It's risky but they're such good foragers they should have plenty to eat if they have enough room. I use troughs under the barn roof and a 5 gallon waterer and it lasts a good while- assuming you get rain and leave enough water I don't think that should be a problem...

    Wet/oily/slimy neck and head,body intact

DE works for snails, slugs, and other crawling things but not sure about snakes. I'm sure I've seen powders and repellants of all kinds at the store but never tried em. I've got ceramic eggs and golf balls but the one I'm after keeps spitting them out. (Haven't had him get any chickens yet.) I...

    Wet/oily/slimy neck and head,body intact

agree w/ ^. Had a full grown guinea dead the same way and right next to it a 5 ft. chicken snake. I still have people say that it wasn't the snake but I've heard it happen to lots of folks, it's just usually chicks.

    The Serpents Have Been Arrested!

I had a 5-6 footer the other night right in front of the coop as I was going to shut them in for the night. Ran back into the house for the gun and couldn't find it when I got back. He's been swallowing the ceramic eggs but keeps spitting them out. When I get him I'll put a picture up. Haven't...

    Neighbors Dogs Advise

Unfortunate you had to spend all that but I hope it works out. And once again animal control does nothing. Best of luck
