We're at the end of day 19 and I just found a pipped egg about an hour ago. It's toward the small end of the egg, though...should I be worried. I've had zero success with my last two hatches (hatched one batch successfully before that). We just have a LG forced air incubator and had trouble...
Is this wise? He's been in with the same four girls for about 3.5 months, but we'd like him to fertilize the eggs of our five girls from the other coop. Is he likely to just get picked on, or does being a rooster grant him any privileges in that respect?
Any hints on doing this, if you think...
OK, newbie question here. I've hatched eggs once before, in an incubator. These were eggs I bought from someone else. Now my rooster is finally doing his thing and our eggs are fertile (checked some for the "bulls-eye" shape). We still have the incubator but would like to let one of the hens...
Today, one of our new layers laid her egg in the litter box we use as a wading pool for chickens. With the shells being porous, I assumed we shouldn't eat this egg. What do you think?
Thanks.
I'm sorry but I have no pictures to go with this post...am packing for vacation. We have a pullet about 19-20 weeks old, purchased at Atwood's as a tiny chick. She had partridge markings as a chick and is now a beautiful red color with a bit of gold lacing (I believe that's the term) around...
I wasn't sure where this would go, so am putting it here. We've had chickens only a few months, and our first few pullets all seem to have bright golden eyes. Now we have a 9 week old presumed rooster (Barred Rock) and he's got pretty green eyes. Does eye color vary by breed? I know Silkies...
I could use some help again. These girls came out of the pullet bin at Atwood's a few weeks ago...they were feathered out quite a bit and I estimated they were 1 and 2-3 weeks old respectively. That would put them at 8-10 weeks now. My pictures aren't the best...these two are hard to handle...
This little girl came from the pullet bin at Atwood's. If I understand correctly, that means she is from Ideal Poultry, is that right? I keep looking all through their breeds trying to figure her out, but am still stumped...could she be some sort of brown leghorn? In these pics she is about...
We noticed one of our young bantams was really swollen in the rear end last week....after being turned down by every vet in town (even those who say they see livestock and/or birds) our regular vet agreed to see him, though she is not experienced with chickens. She believes he has fecal...
This little "guy" is a bantam and we thought male, about 9 weeks old now. About three weeks ago, we attempted to introduce him to our other chickens outside and they picked his vent area quite badly. I cleaned it up well and put him back in with some younger chicks and he has seemed to recover...
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We first got chickens back in January, starting with young chicks.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
17
(3) What breeds do you have? 3 BO pullets, 2 Black Australorp pullets, 1 white Aracauna pullet, 1 Black Rock...
Just for the fun of hatching out and to add to our backyard flock. Show quality not needed. Chickens are our big homeschool project this year and we just hatched out standards yesterday. Assorted colors would be fun if possible. Thanks.
