This was not what I had in mind...

This week we harvested the concord grapes in our backyard, and I left most of the ones that were a pain to get to. Partly because there were already more than we needed, and partly because I like watching the little swallows and other little birds who show up to finish them off in the fall...

"Grocery store" egg hatch, part easter egger, part ???

Loving the name too! Thanks all! I just hope she doesn't end up being as unbelievably loud as the Rhode Islands my brother had a few years ago. Those ladies drove me NUTS.

"Grocery store" egg hatch, part easter egger, part ???

I hatched this (probably) girl about 5 weeks ago under a broody hen. She's one of 4 that hatched from 11 eggs from the farmers market (which were refrigerated, which is why the "grocery store"). I know she hatched from a blue egg, so she's part easter egger. There's apparently a small chance...

    Lemon Balm, Thyme, and Oregano

I used to have lemon balm in my backyard. The chickens ate it all, and they're still alive and kickin, so it would appear to be safe. I have loads of oregano taking over my garden and have given it to my hens, but they have no interest. I presume it's safe, they've taken a few bites, but we have...

It seemed close and was all I could find, so I ran with it and treated her with vitamin E and selenium. She stopped having problems after 2 or 3 days and has been perfectly healthy since. From what...

Why is my chicken honking ?

Mine all did that at around 3-4 months old. I've got a wyandotte who's been honking for about a week, she's just short of 4 months old. I presume it's just their little chicken voices changing, and the honking is the intermediary between the peeps and the clucks.

When can a hen go broody?

Oh look a few questions I can answer! I don't know what age a hen must be in order to brood, but I would guess past when they start laying eggs. There doesn't need to be a rooster. I've got a broody Australorp right now who hasn't ever seen a rooster in her life. She needs to sit on fertilized...
