Good to see you taking the step forward. Reminds me of when I was a kid ... some Time ago lol. Have you thought about dog sitting/walking as well? A friend of mine does this where she sleeps and cares for animals while the owners are on vacation.
Thanks for all the insight to my questions everyone (nicely broken down and explained rigerunner). My neighbor and I get along vary well.he is far more educated on chickens then myself (for the most part). I don't mind if they mingle during the day, just want the eggs continued to be in my...
Just curious if I decide to hatch eggs in the spring what's the outcome going to be? Obviously there different breeds of chickens. I was thinking about hatching some for my neighbor, and giving them to him (might keep one or two myself). But currently they are all really good egg layers, and...
Is there is a proper way to clean eggs for consumption. First I did try the search and it came up blank (find this hard to believe? ). What I have been doing is just using a dish sponge dedicated for egg cleaning only. No soap just cold water and refrigerate after. Is this okay to continue it...
The dogs owner need to train/contain the dog's. Even though you're able to let them off leash doesn't mean every one likes dogs, or maybe had bad childhood in counter. I live pretty much in the country like you describe and I know my neighbors love dogs, but they know their boundaries of never...
I'd say that having them roost in the coop is good. They know that there safe and it's home in there. As said above a week is not a long time for a new home. You will probably see as each week goes by they will become more inquisitive in their surroundings and explore more. This is from my own...
I'm not experienced in chickens by any means (still a noob), but mine have all started laying with the exception of 2 different breeds. I was on the hunt for a while for a light in the coop for winter. I finally found this inexpensive led flood light on ebay (10watt one is what I bought) works...
I just recently went through this as well. Only exception was I had three laying in all different locations. also let mine free range all day as well. I ended up just keeping them in the coop/pen. I did this for a week and still leave them locked in until all have layed.
So it finally arrived that most of my chickens have started laying eggs. I currently have one that's been laying in the barn and not the nesting box daily.
And just yesterday my children found three eggs out under the pine trees. They are free range all of the Time. I let them out in the early...
Thanks you. I should have said this is about 100-150 yards away from the coop. One good thing I suspect is the neighbors chickens where out all day everyday. There was never a problem until dark hit with his. But I suspect he forgot to close the coop at dusk when his tragedies happened.
So I'm a complete noob with chickens. I've keep them at their coop/pen for a few weeks, I believe it's around two plus so far. My goal was to have them to free range during the summer days. Witch I've been slowly keeping them out longer and longer each day. All has been going extremely well if...
Thank you all so far for the warm welcome. I'll get some fake eggs to place in the nesting box. They have been nesting in there during the night, witch seems like it should be a good thing. The waiting is definitely the hard part for sure!
Hello everyone. Just thought I would join you're group of great information and good people. So a little about me I'm located in upstate New York. I had a friend a few years ago that started his own flock of chickens. He gave me a couple dozen eggs....and then I was hooked. I laughed at him at...
