I have had a long term issue and am at my wit's end...a year ago, I had a 18 month old EE develop some bald spots. There was NO evidence of pests. Everyone said it was a slow molt. At that time, i treated with ivermectin to be on the safe side. However, the loss has slowly but surely continued...
Another question- Our flock consists of 1 EE rooster, 4 EE hens, and 2 other hens. We got all the EE's from a friend who was moving. They are 6 mos and never have laid. The other hens are from our neighbor. They arw 1 1/2 yrs and laid for them. They gave them to us, and they each laid an egg for...
In regard to a water bowl, i have been using the plastic one that came with the birds and coop. I hate it, but it has been workable bc i have had it outside so it hasnt been a big deal when they overturn it...multiple times a day.
Since we are supposed to get snow too, i am wanting to get...

Sorry, hit wrong button. Anyway, i think if i combine your ideas with those of @yellowchicks on the run, they might be ok. Our winter here was pretty bitter last year, and i hate to not be well enough prepared. Thanks again to you both!
Thanks...i hadnt thoufht if putting panels like that up for the run. It would definitely help block the wind and keep out precipitation. I think i will try that! Should help the coop stay a little warmer too.
Ok, thanks. I think what i have been struggling with is that our coop is so small, and...
Good to hear!! Our neighbors got some c the same time (but a different breed), and have been getting eggs for months now. They keep teasing me that if i treated them more like chickens and less like pets maybe they would have laid by now. :) So just wanted to make sure.
Thanks! And just in case what i said sounded wrong, i wasnt implying anything you had done wrong. It was completely my own laziness i was mentioning. :) We got our cat initially bc of the rodent problem we inherited too, but we just have one tiny building she has to patrol. So she has plenty of...
Thank you VERY much, racinchickins! I gave them to our neighbors (who will process them) today. They ganged up on our favorite rooster (who is super sweet) and cut him. :( And thanks also for the egg advice...i was getting kind of worried i would have to wait until then. I cant believe i have 6...
I have been so lazy about getting a container for the chicken feed...I've e just been trusting our cat to take care of them for me. NO MORE after reading about hundreds of mice!! Ugh!!!
Thank you, jtn! So the flap over the opening kind of sticks up from the bottom? And is there a certain temp you would leave the coop closed all day (so they couldn't even go into the run) to conserve heat?
Jttn,
This was very helpful. If you dont mind a couple questions....our coop is a converted wooden playhouse. I will wrap in a tarp to helo with drafts, but do i need to do anything further, other than what was already mentioned (ventilation, etc). Also, if you are able, could you post a pic of...
Hello all,
We have 4 EE's born Apr 13th that haven't laid yet. Is that normal, or am i doing something wrong?
Also, we have 3 roosters, but need to get rid of two that have begun to be aggressive to my little girl. Is it normal for roosters to go after children but not adults? She hasnt done...
I am loving these posts. No eggs here yet (hatched Apr. 13), but one of the roosters was on top of our hen that has the reddest waddle and area around eyes. I am assuming that might mean she is close?
And can someone explain the egg laying song?
