    New Here

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone! Only 2 out of 4 of my BSLs have large floppy combs. I'll make sure to put Vaseline on them when it gets colder in the evenings. Last winter when I moved here, it was -25 degrees at the coldest. I'll definitely be doing some chicken math and adding...

    New Here

My chickens are almost 6 months old now. I have 5, and 4 are laying (4 are black sex links, the 5th is an SLW). I've been lurking and reading for quite awhile. And I've been following the Facebook page. Former city chick here. Only got to see chickens in college (animal science major)...

Keeping the coop warm in the winter, HOW?

Doubling up could be a good idea. If I double up just 2 maybe they won't be all over the place pooping all over the coop. One could hope.

I believe these are spoken for now, but just as a backup I will try again on posting pics later today.

Keeping the coop warm in the winter, HOW?

Quote: The bottom roosts are flipped flat side up. The top boards cannot be flipped at they are part of the attic. I had branch roosts at first, they didn't like that. So I put in a flat 2x4 roost. They sit on it for awhile, then jump up to the top ones. That's why I was wondering if I...

Keeping the coop warm in the winter, HOW?

Good to know that they should just go to the lower roost if they are too drafty. I was mainly concerned as I'd heard of someone's rooster freezing to death because he refused to roost inside the nice warm coop (or semi-warm) because he wanted to be up higher. The lower roosts have been changed...

Keeping the coop warm in the winter, HOW?

I have a 4 foot x 8 foot coop with 5 cold hardy chickens. They have roosts, but prefer to use the rafters instead. Should I close off the "attic" for the winter to force them to roost lower? It's not really drafty up there. There are vents, but wind doesn't blow right through as they are...

St. Paul MN 2 Pullets 20+ weeks old Barred Rock and Australorp

Just wanted to post an update to say one has just started laying. Transport is available within a reasonable distance too if the drive is putting off a good home!

These 2 should be laying any day now. They are currently indoor chickens, but obviously they want to be outdoor chickens and would love to join your awesome setup. They are both ridiculously people friendly as they have lived indoors their entire lives in a home with children. Would make a...
