Hens that keep laying until the day they die? Say hi to the Deathlayer!

Least hardy breed I’ve ever had. Got 11 and all but 2 died. Of course they are two roosters. Definitely a smaller breed. Would come up lame all the time, like a broken wing, then a few days later die. At around 2 months old. Raised with a bunch of other chicks and the other chicks from other...

    Online Tractor Supply Chick Order

ordered 10 Rhode Island Red chicks from tractor supply. You order in groups of 10 so 10 was the least I could order. 10 chicks shipped was $37.44 total. Hard to beat that price for shipped chicks. Ordered December 30th and shipped January 2nd. They come from Hoover’s Hatchery. Right after I...

    100% free range

Currently the chickens and turkeys are all on layer pellets. The first 3 months the turkeys got wild game bird feed but now everyone is mixed together and they all get later pellets. The ducks are the only ones completely 100% free range. Have been about 90% free range for about 5 months but...

    100% free range

Curious on a sq ft per chicken, or more likely, X acres per X number of chickens rule of thumb for going 100% free range plus table/garden scraps, but not buying feed. I’m in coastal South Carolina so winters are pretty mild here and can forage all year. I have about 1.5 acres fully fenced in...

Female looking cream legbar with yellow dot

99% sure this is a female but the very distinct yellow dot on top is giving me pause before putting her up for sale. Especially since people that buy cream legbar, buy them for the assurance of getting the gender they want (and the blue eggs of course).

    Roosters can be pretty cool

We named him Mr Fagin. Hope he turns out to be an awesome rooster

    Roosters can be pretty cool

Cream Legbar. He’s going to end up being awesome or aggressive. He’s pretty protective of those little chicks but hopefully he will mellow out some. Definitely keeping him to see how he turns out.

    Roosters can be pretty cool

i had one male chick from a hatch a month ago and had sold the rest. Kept him in the brooder pen to teach some newly hatched chicks how to eat and drink. The pen is outside with a heat lamp but it got down to 32 last night. Went out this morning and the little one month old rooster had all these...

    South Carolina

Finally found this thread. I’ve never been able to find where state threads were. I’m in Pawleys Island. I mostly raise light brahma and cream legbar. I’ve got welsh harlequin ducks. And other hens (Easter eggers and copper Marans ) but any of their eggs would produce Easter Eggers since they...

Eyes puffy/diff breathing one by one

If you potentially have coryza in your flock you definitely need to get a real diagnosis because in that case ultimately you may be forced to destroy your entire flock. Very infectious. Your flock will always have it. It can continue to rear up at anytime. You shoukd never sell another chicken...

The common issue of too many roosters

Unfortunately two incompatible truths exist: #1 half of all eggs that hatch are males And #2 a healthy flock (and most chicken owners) don’t need a flock that is 50% roosters When I have too many roosters first I list them for money on Craigslist. After a while I list them for free on...

Wanted/ISO - light brahma chicks - delivery or SC for pick up

ive got some now and the hens are big but the roosters are no taller than the hens. Rough measurement and my rooster is only about 21 inches tall (looking where he comes up to on the wall of the run and then measureing from the ground to that point). If anyone has some real tall roosters and...

    Is this from a hawk?

Appreciate the info. I'm keeping my ducks penned up for a while. They haven't started laying again yet. I'm not letting them out again till I have a bunch of eggs I can incubate just in case something happens. I'm also keeping my chickens penned up for the time being. Hopefully in the...

    Is this from a hawk?

The duck survived. It also had an injured leg which healed after a few weeks. Gave the duck away to someone who bought a few ducks from me, wanted to get down to all one breed. That lone puncture was the only puncture I found. Amazingly it never got sick and other than being a runt, is seemingly...

    Is this from a hawk?

I’ve been keeping them locked up but I hate it and they hate it. I’m 99% (can never be 100%) that my dog didn’t do it but I never can see the kill site because each time we only found the carcass because my dog was chewing on it in the front yard. I saw I’m pretty sure because he finds dead...
