    Bloody Beak?

Any idea what is going on here? Two hens. Seem to live fine together. Never seen any sign of trouble. One of them seems to have a bloody beak.

No eggs for more than a month

So, put a light in the roosting part of the coop? Leave it on for how many hours a day? (I’m not closing up the roosting part of the coop unless it’s a hard freeze at night btw.) If I don’t add light, when should I expect to see eggs again? Thx.

Rain barrel water safe for chickens?

I know I'm not really using very much tap water for my chickens. But I have the rain barrel... Seemed like the right thing to do as long as it won't harm them.

Well, it is also not treated to kill bacteria and parasites. Should I periodically clean the barrel with some water and bleach? Any advice on how to most safely use this water, would be appreciated. Thx.

I have a rain water barrel. Can I use that to water my chickens? Or do I have to use tap water to be safe?

    Can I free range?

We live in suburban Washington DC. We got a coop. And we pretty much let our two hens have free run of our fenced in yard. At night or when we would be away for extended stretches of time, we closed the hens in the coop. But whenever we were home during the day, they could roam and have fun...
