     Coconut oil

Thanks. They definitely have slowed down on their excitement around the coconut oil treats. Only pecking them occasionally. They are increasing their food intake as summer approaches and their egg production increases.

Chicken Breed Focus Rhode Island Red

I hatched out 12 RIR chicks from eggs given to me by a breeder close by. 6 Roosters & 6 hens. We gave 5 of the roosters away to fellow chicken lovers as we couldn't bear the thought of "our babies" being culled. They are a welcome addition to our flock - a total of 14. We have Black rumpless...

     Coconut oil

Great to hear :) I use coconut oil in my cooking too. I then mix the oil I've cooked with to mix in with the seeds. I pour the oily seed mixture into a old yoghurt cup & place in the freezer to harden. I use a old wire suetball bird feeder & hand=g that in the coop. They peck as required. Its...

     Coconut oil

I recently discovered my ladies go crazy for coconut oil seed balls. I mix flax sunflower millet other wild bird seeds in a coconut oil base. I give them a 1/2lb ball every other day. They seem to eat it and lose interest after a while. They take a while to finish it - about 2 days. Is it...

    Coconut oil for my hens

I recently made a coconut oil seed ball for my wild birds and some broke off into the run below - approx 1lb. My ladies devoured it. I made another one about 1/2 lb and hung it for my 8 hens. They ate that too albeit slower than the first one. When is too much a bad thing?

Funny looking egg - is it a sign of a problem?

Thanks for the feedback - My hens are all now eating commercial laying pellet feed. I scatter crushed eggshells into their run. So not sure about the calcium being an issue. The dark spot looks as if the top of the egg didnt get "shelled" and that dark ring has a short tail almost placenta like...

Funny looking egg - is it a sign of a problem?

Hi, I recently intergrated by 8 older hens with 10 RIR's (18 weeks old). No issues except the odd bit of pecking order nastiness. Now this morning I found this egg in my laying box. Any ideas as to why or what it portends?

    Funny looking eggs

I intergrated my 8 older hens with the 10 RIR's that are 18 weeks old three days ago. There doesnt seem to be too much stress in the run as the pecking order was quickly established. Then this morning I found this egg (see pic). Any ideas? is there something up with my older hens, diet? stress...

Advice on frequncy of egg collection.

I collect mine three times in the morning as that's when my girls lay. Sadly doesn't increase daily rate but does stop my broody ladies from deciding to sit

    Auracana or ameracauna????

I have two black Auracana hens. Both rumpless and go broody at the drop of a hat :). One lays blue eggs, the other lays olive eggs. Both were bought from a respected breeder in Grabouw. Feisty, full of fun and great moms. Would love a lavender hen or three. Let us know how the brteeding goes...

    Cockerels or Hens?

Thanks Jeff, I "woke up" to the sexing issue a little too late. Maybe next time I'll do the wing feather check at 3 days & then keep an eye on them at 4 weeks. If you have any pics of what to look for I'd appreciate them :)

    Cockerels or Hens?

Thanks. I will post a few pics when I am allowed to :) Their behaviour has settled down, so maybe it was just a pecking order issue.

    Greetings from South Africa

Thank you for letting me join the BYC Forum :) I grew up in the middle of the city but my father had a veggie patch, a few orange & grapefruit trees plus chickens & rabbits, dogs, budgies, finches, tropical fish & hamsters so I guess my hankering for fowls started way back then. My wife...

    Cockerels or Hens?

I was fortunate to be given 20 fertilized eggs from a friend who has registered Show chicken champion Rhode Island Reds. 12 chicks hatched and all have survived & are now 12 weeks old. I can definitely peg 8 of them as hens - small yellowish combs, tiny to non-existent wattles, docile behavior...
