    are chickens "racist"?

I have noticed that my same species chickens seem to always form their own "flock". My first round was a few RIR and Sex Link chics all at the same time. they almost immediately split up and did not mix. I took that as a good indicator the breeds will not willingly mix with other breeds...

    damn sparrows

Sparrows and doves have become my biggest problem. Not rats but they are still around. My coop has an automatic door that is open all day so they can free range my backyard. The feeder is inside the coop but the local birds have started going inside and feeding all day. The door is small and...

oh no...not another feeder question. keeping birds and rats out? treadle designs?

I've got double trouble. In the day, sparrows and doves are flying into the coop and feeding. At night rats can come feast. The coop door opens during the day letting wild birds in and no coop is rat proof. It's just predator proof. My current set up is a PVC tube and wye with a top lid...

    eggs stopped cold

got 4 hens, all about 3 years old. They have all gone cold for a couple weeks. I've never in 8 years had a 2 week total dry spell. I've searched the whole run area...nothing hidden anywhere. Hoping it's just the weather. South Texas so we really don't have a winter.

    rat mystery

I had noticed lots of rat poop in the coop past couple weeks or so but never saw any. The feed tube cap had been malfunctioning. I placed some snap traps and caught one. then nothing more. Anyway, next week was a rat swarm. Capped off the feed tube and placed freshly cleaned traps, so...

starting to notice lots of thin shells

I've getting lots of broken eggs lately...like the past few months...some of the eggs are notably thin. The girls are about 2 years old. They get layer feed and get to free range a section of the backyard daily, all day long (nothing but dirt is left). I have crushed oyster shell available...

mystery chicken.....started with "these two dudes"

I got home one day and my tenant/roommate immediately said "these two dudes"...I stopped him right there since no good story ever started with "these two dudes"... apparently a couple guys came by and offered him a chicken since they had apparently seen mine. Their story was they had a dog in...

no one is eating oyster shell...why?

I once tried to go all 20% for a while and offer oyster shell on the side. I never saw any oyster shell eaten. The same dish of oyster has been untouched for 3-4 years. Every time I go back to try only protein feed the oyster never gets touches and eventually I give up and go back to layer feed.

roaches in the coop...how to harvest for treats?

chickens love roaches...well something we all know. So I'm trying to figure out how to "encourage" roaches to gather for then easy feeding to the chickens. So my coop/house has a small storage area just above the nesting boxes that is a haven for roaches. Any time I have this storage open...

    how to isolate a bully?

I have a bully that needs serious corrective action... she is the largest and bossiest girl in the flock. Basically the "rooster". I have 3-4 birds with lots of feathers missing...she is picking on several of the flock. The "standard" method I've seen talked about is isolation from the flock...

how to integrate chicks with an open door coop?

My coop set up is totally open to the outside yard 7am to sunset. The one door is open all day long allowing access to the whole outside backyard. It's an automatic door. I want to introduce my new chicks early to the flock. I'm wanting to put the brooder inside the coop. The problem is...

hen always squats and waddles...but not egg bound?

One of my hens suddenly just squats all the time and reluctantly waddles around if she needs to move. She just stays on the ground. From what I've searched and googled is sounds like she is egg bound. I 've inspected her as best I can. I used a latex glove and some KY and stuck my finger all...
