One of my favorite hens happens to be my big boy's favorite as well. Being a first time chicken owner, I was unaware that Roo's were capable of such feather damage when mounting. Geez! As soon as I discovered this thread, I got right to work on making a saddle.
It was the first time I've ever...
My flock of nine enjoys having a small, shallow wading pool set under the shade of the trees.
I let them out to free range every morning, and by early afternoon they're all gathered around the wading pool cooling their feet off or taking a sit. The resident duck enjoys hanging out in there with...
I honestly have no clue about the farm ordeal. I would like to think that most are honest people, but then again I just found out that what I thought were my Ameraucana's are most likely Easter Eggers (that I paid $8 a chick for under a false label). That hatcheries that do know the difference...
I've never owned a BSL, so I'm unsure as to how their chicks look at that age, but they will obviously part BSL even if they are mongrels.
From the looks of a google image search, I found a thread here on BYC that shows a few BSL looking babies similar to yours if you scroll down a bit: { x }...
Sadly, she would do it again since it's in her nature because of her breed. Not all breeds get along with other species, no matter what's done. It all depends on the dog's personality, too.
It does take training to teach them not to do so, but even then there are fall backs from what I've...
If you truly want pures, you need to absolutely keep the pair separated to their own pens. No free ranging or anything. That's what I did for my (mostly) Ameraucana hatch that just got done.
My Ameraucana cockerel was so bad at breeding, though! Seriously. It took two weeks to even get 10 eggs...
As far as I'm aware, Jack Russels ARE hunting dogs. They were bred for fox hunting.
I once owned a part Jack Russel as a child and she was so high energy that she would chew and chase just about anything that moved. Including me! In a playful manner, of course.
I'm so sorry to hear she got one...
Considering your username is '4everacres,' it sounds like a chicken retirement home in the works already! xD
I'm nowhere near having to make this decision as of yet, but I already know the choice that will be made once that day comes.
I'm with lightchick: I'm sure she's actually a Black Sex Link. She looks a lot like the hens on google images: { x }
I owned a Australorp pullet, and she was pure black with iridescent greens. No other colors on her.
Also as lightchick said, she's probably just really stressed out right now...
@NaturalHens : Your babies are ADORABLE, and so is your daughter!
I honestly love crossbreeding just to see the results! I'm surprised to see that your chicks look lavender! How is that so?
Does the color pull stronger from Darla? Or is your Buff a lavender color? I'm still learning about how...
Everyone has such lovely Amereaucana's or EE's! I never knew there was a difference between the breed. This has certainly taught me some things.
I'm pretty sure now that I probably have EE's who were sold off to me from a hatchery as Ameraucana's, but I love the light blue eggs my one little hen...
