I bought chicks at Tractor Supply that we’re supposed to be Golden Comets. That was 6 months ago, and they are just now starting to lay. On top of that, they are a lot bigger than Golden Comets are supposed to get. To me, they look more like Rhode Island Reds. What do y’all think?

I was doing it because I was under the impression that it would promote egg production. This is the first time I’ve raised hens from chicks. I’ve always had adult hens before that were already laying. I’m I’m wrong there, please educate me.

I’ve got 23 golden comets. My wife and I bought them from Tractor Supply in March, and they were supposed to be 4-6 weeks old then. This is June, and I’ve still yet to see a single egg. Everything I’ve read said they should start laying at around 16 weeks. I’m feeding them cracked corn and layer...

Waiting is not a big issue for me, as I’m MOSTLY interested in eggs and wouldn’t slaughter any until their egg production slowed down anyway. They would probably be around 2 years when I slaughtered them. I’m considering crossing them with a RIR rooster.

I’m in North Mississippi, about an hour south of Memphis, so we don’t have to worry about the hurricanes. Tornadoes, however, are a much different story. Tornadoes are so common that we go sit on the porch and watch for them to go by.
