Who else is waiting for that first egg?

5 eggs in 3 days from 2 hens, not bad! Now if the rest would get on board it world be great! So far only Penny-my GSL, and l Lil' red-my RIR have figure out what to do... Hopefully they will teach the rest!

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

Make that 2 eggs! Not sure who the second one is from but I suspect my RIR! Went to take them some cantaloupe and looked in the boxes again just for fun and found egg #2!

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

We got out first egg! My GSL started singing yesterday but I found no egg.. Today I heard her sing at about 11 AM but didn't go right away to look. I went out just now and found a small brown egg!

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

OK, thanks for all the info! Several are squatting--now that I know what it means.. Lol. The 2 in question have larger combs that have turned red and have lately been spending more time inside the henhouse scratching around. Hopefully I will get that first egg soon! Maybe the weather will cool...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

Do they start singing the egg song before they actually lay? I heard my GSL "singing" this morning about 9 am. It sounded just like the hens in this link. I had gone out there earlier and she and my RIR were squawking up a storm and it almost sounded like the egg song. Then when I was about to...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

Very hot here in Southeast TX as well. I read that you can freeze a milk jug of water and put it out there and they will huddle around it to stay cool. I just emptied a milk jug and have it freezing... Our coop is raised and our hens get underneath it to be shaded. I was thinking of putting it...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

My hens are all 20 weeks. Luckily I have a friend with a large flock who shares eggs with me as we are still eagerly awaiting the first egg. We went to IHOP today after a dr. Appt that I had. Not thinking, I order a plate that contains eggs. After eating fresh eggs for months now, those IHOP...

    Randy rooster!

We have 6 hens and one rooster. (Did have 2 roos but managed to rehome one) My Hens have not started laying yet at 20 wks old. My rooster keeps trying to breed with the hens. He is also 20 wks. Is that even possible yet? I would think if they aren't laying yet that they aren't old enough to...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

I have 2 RIR, 2 BO, 2 GSL. They are all going to be 20 weeks tomorrow. No eggs yet. I don't understand all this talk about squatting. I can see how they would feel the need to squat some before they start laying, but I don't understand why people keep mentioning them squatting when you touch...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

I managed to check a couple of my hens today. I checked the ones whose combs have gotten bigger and darker within the last week or so. I managed to find the pelvis bones and a RIR and a BO both had bones that were opened about a finger width. I will continue to check them about once a week. what...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

When I first read this, I was really thinking that my hens would not tolerate this procedure, but when I went out there this morning. I gently scooped up one of my RIRs and she was very accommodating. My problem is that I don't know what I'm looking for. I mean, I know where my pelvis bones...

Rooster dominance or only one roo?

Yes, they are about 13 weeks. I really spent some time observing them yesterday and they both definitely have the pointy saddle feathers as well. All the hens have rounded ones. It makes me sad because we really didn't want to keep a cockerel since we only have 6 hens. That means we will have no...

    hen or non dominant roo?

Thanks so much for the advice! They are equally nice so far. It's just that one crows and clucks warnings to the hens and the other hangs out with the hens--maybe he just knows where the action is!

Rooster dominance or only one roo?

Since the short trail roo seems dominant will it hurt to keep them together. They don't seem aggressive now, but I'm not sure what they will do once they are mature and the hens are breeding age.

    hen or non dominant roo?

Does the long tail act like a hen due to the dominance of the other roo? Is hatchery quality bad? Should I rehome the non dominant one so that he will be more likely to get along in an existing flock.

    hen or non dominant roo?

Above is my SS roo. He stands up and crows loudly. I have seen him do it. He is 13 weeks old. Above is the bird in question. In my newbie opinion, this one actually has a more rooster-like tail. It has never crowed and its comb is not quite as red or big as the roo we are certain about, but...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

Aww poor little things. I am so afraid to free range my chickens because of this. They are in a pen that is completely enclosed. It is plenty big enough to not let them out but I do let them out in the yard when I can stay with them. We have leash laws around here but few people abide by it. So...
