    Broody Hen Thread!

Yes, exactly! I didn't believe it, but I was having a moment of "that's not right" and concern that this woman was passing along false information as the truth. I did find a very useful article on Wikipedia, with sources, describing the physiology behind broodiness. The hormones and...

    Broody Hen Thread!

Hello! I'm looking for a fact-check here. Someone on a FB group I'm in just made a statement that does not seem to mesh with anything I've heard about broody hens. She said "hens become broody due to discomfort in their breast area. the pressure of the eggs helps relieve it." I've...

What do you get when you cross breed Rhode Island red and golden comet?

That is how my little one looks. He/she is 12 weeks old. I've been thinking it was a rooster because the comb and wattles were HUGE at 4 weeks, but I didn't have any other chicks with his hatch, so I have nothing to compare. It's just him and the rest of my flock is turning 1 year in April...

What do you get when you cross breed Rhode Island red and golden comet?

I have plenty of him! And there is the hen who laid the egg: She is one of the lighter RiRs I had, but honestly, if I had not been physically present to see her lay that egg, I would not have believed the chick has any RiR in him/her.

What do you get when you cross breed Rhode Island red and golden comet?

Guess I will do a follow up... here is the same chick I posted pictures of in November. The mother is a Rhode Island Red, father a golden comet. I was there, physically present the exact moment the egg was laid, I marked it with the date and name of the hen. I know for 100% the hen...

What do you get when you cross breed Rhode Island red and golden comet?

Thank you! This is what the chick looks looks like. It's day old now: I had another egg under her but it hasn't hatched. I don't think its going to. Saturday was Day 21.

What do you get when you cross breed Rhode Island red and golden comet?

Hi. I'm semi new here. I've been a new chicken owner since April. We have 3 golden comets (2 hens and a rooster) and 13 Rhode Island Red hens. I'm resurrecting this older post because, as I mentioned above, our rooster is a golden comet. We have let one of our hens hatch out a couple eggs...
