That is how my little one looks. He/she is 12 weeks old. I've been thinking it was a rooster because the comb and wattles were HUGE at 4 weeks, but I didn't have any other chicks with his hatch, so I have nothing to compare. It's just him and the rest of my flock is turning 1 year in April. No crowing yet, so I can't be certain.the roosters were nearly identical in color to the Comet hens, with the littlest bit of white trim at the bottom edge if the neck feathers.
I hope this post will still be active. I will be trying to have my own flock of RIR roo cross with red sex link. But my females are still at 2 month olds. So this posts is really helpful. I hope it's easier to identify the males and females when I breed them in the futureThe results out of my RIR Rooster over Comet Hens led to the hens looking like RIR minus the black tail feathers, the roosters were nearly identical in color to the Comet hens, with the littlest bit of white trim at the bottom edge if the neck feathers. I believe if someone would do it, that the cross between either or of these back to a RIR would result in a nearly pergect replica of a RIR. Just my humble opinion.
do the crosses lay good i have some around 8 weeks oldI had 4 of those to hatch and are a little over 6 weeks old now. Most are a buff color with a little white lacing and some black mingled in. There is one rooster that I think is going to be very pretty. He is mostly red, with a little white in his wings and his tail. I will try to post a picture for you.
