Hello,
I'm in the planning process for a new run, approx 10 x 12. It will need to have a good cover/roof of some sort for predator protection and I would like it to provide shade and block snow.
Current options being considered are corrugated fiberglass or metal, shade tarp, plywood...
Three French Black Copper Marans hens, almost two years old, friendly, will eat from hand.
Two lavandar/splash Americana pullets, will come when feeding scratch but not eat from hand.
Unfortunately I no longer have the time to care for these lovely ladies and hope to move them on to a good...
Hi,
My Americanas are still flying up to roost on the 6 ft chain link fence around the run. I have clipped one wing on each chicken, should I be clipping both wings?
Thank you
Hi,
incubation for our guinea eggs did not go well and we have just one sweet little keet. Splayed legs so I have used a pipe cleaner to try to get them back inline. Just put it on a few minutes ago so will have to see how it is working tomorrow.
But what to do with one lonely keet. We...
Hi,
right now we have three guineas in with our chickens. All share the same run that is not covered. This is nice in that it lets the guineas fly in and out as they please. The past few weeks a hawk as settled in the area and frequently dines in the chicken yard. We are going to have to...
Hi,
What are the best layers through the winter, for brown eggs? We have 20 hens - 6 black copper marans and the rest a mix of EE, BR, black and Gold Laced Wyandottes and Welsummers. The marans began laying in the fall, the rest of the ladies went into their first molt but look to be fully...
Hi,
not sure of the best topic for posting this...
Is anyone aware of food banks that accept home grown eggs? If so are there processing/cleaning requirements?
Thanks
Hi we hatched Black Copper Marans this spring and now have lovely hens and handsome cockerels. I was surprised the other day when one of the guys walked by and I realized the bottoms of his feet were yellow. At first I thought he must have walked through something. His legs and tops of his...
Hi,
we have two coops connected to the same chicken yard. A smaller section has been fenced off for the smaller coop that our 12 week marans are now in. For a week now the Marans have been mixing with our year old flock of hens during the day. It is going well so that the four days we have...
Hi,
Do guinea hens ever use nest boxes?
Our guineas share a coop and run with the hens. During the day the guineas fly out and free range and so far are good about coming back to roost at night. The past three weeks we have been occasionally finding eggs in the nest boxes that are very...
Hi,
We have 18 Black Copper Marans eggs in a still air LG, day 14.
Candling on day 8 I was not able to tell very much and it finally occurred to me that I should have had white eggs for this first time incubating. . .
Today I was able to see more when candling. HOW COOL to see movement in...
Hi,
In a week we hope to be picking up 12 fertile eggs for Black Copper Morans. We are borrowing an incubator.
Please share your experience and let us know what is best to do, or more importantly, what not to do!
The forum has been very helpful and interesting as we are learning about...
Hi,
I would like to let our 15 hens free range all day this summer but am wondering about where the eggs will end up. Occasionally there is an egg in the nest boxes when I go out in the morning but usually all the eggs are waiting when I get home from work. If I let the Ladies free range are...
Our new flock of 15 is kicking into egg laying gear. Now that we will more than enough eggs I want to give them to friends and sell some of them. I know it is best not to wash the eggs, but if I will be providing others withe eggs I am feeling that they should be washed.
Do you wash eggs...
Hi,
my DH has requested white eggs in addition to the brown and blue/green eggs we collect from my flock.
Of course any chickens added to the flock will need an introduction period before the move in. Are their any differences in adding purchased pullets or pullets we raise from peeps...
