I had a hen go broody and let her hatch an egg from my buff orpington hen and black splash (I think) bantam cochin. The chick came out perfectly yellow except for four spots of black on the top of its head the size of specks of pepper. Do yellow chicks tend to stay light colored, or am I in for...
LOL I have 7 identical nest boxes and all 7 of my hens stand in front of it screaming at whoever is in it because they HAVE to use that particular box! Makes it nice for egg collection, but boy does it get loud! I guess by that math I can get a LOT more hens!
I have been having this problem the last three days as well, and mine all started up when a specific chicken started laying. Ironically, it's always her own eggs (I think). I keep finding two eggs a day on the coop floor, one from my bantam black silkie and one from her. I have had ceramic eggs...
That DOES sound strange! But only in the sense of "they still make those?!" HAHAHA I bet they work great. I was also thinking it might work to take an old push broom that has begun to fall apart, drive some nails through in a 1/8 inch grid, and see if it works.
All good points. This part of the run is covered, and I don't have drainage issues anymore, so the concrete would be mostly used as a flat surface to scrape against with shovel/rake/scoop when cleaning the sand. I think in that instance the landscape plastic would be a hindrance, but the damp...
I have a question on this. I have sand now and do love it, but if I were to install a raised concrete pad and then have 6" sand on top of that, does anyone know if I would end up with drainage issues? My thought is that the water would drain through the sand to the concrete, then follow the...
I recently looked online for something better, and there are sand rakes they use to clean up beaches that look perfect. There's one called the Shake-N-Rake that looks promising, easy to make at home. There are also some that you just drag thru the sand to collect the stuff. Happy hunting!
Here is another question, Mt BR has been laying now since the 21st. She'll lay one or two, take a couple days off, lay one or two. All very small. Then yesterday I got a normal - sized egg and thought. "WOOHOO!" But now today, another small egg! How long until she evens out?
Hi all! I thought I'd join in too, if that's okay. I have two bantam roosters, Rudy and Speckles, one bantam hen named Lavender, and two bantam silkies (they don't count as bantam cochins, but they round out the small half of my flock.) I would LOVE it if anyone can tell me what the colorings...
Their combs are definitely large, but not to that extreme. This is them today.
Incidentally, just found our 2nd egg in the middle of the coop, not in the nest boxes, and my BO Goldie was standing by it.
So can I safely assume that my white silkie was the layer, since she was the one standing in the doorway doing the chicken song? I had thought she'd be my latest one to get started. But, no eggs since Friday does make me wonder...
That's too funny! Like a chicken egg-bomb! Sadly, there is a board at the front of the nest box, but the person who built the coop put the bottom of the boxes on the same level as the coop floor, so either we don't put any shavings in the coop, or it turns out to be the same depth. :( Was...
I feel so cheated! Finally got our first egg today, and this is it. :( The hen must have scratched all the shavings out before laying it. There were 3 inches in there! How do I prevent this???
Yes, he is definitely a roo! That's Rudy, who did his firs crow at 8 weeks. I have another roo you can't see hiding behind the other chickens who we're still waiting on a crow from, but he has that same big, bright red comb. I think maybe we got lucky with our hen ratio, as out of 10 the only...
