Whole flock gone in 2 weeks

Yeah it's the same in the back, all boxed in there too. And the door is mechanized and extremely difficult to open manually. You can't pull up on the bottom because it's too sharp and hard to open (I've actually tried!). When it broke I had to pry it open with a piece of wood. So I think our...

Whole flock gone in 2 weeks

Yeah we have them weighted down and hubs just put a special latch in today to hold them shut, but I noticed a small gap between the lid and the box, maybe 1/4" that we'll have to seal too.

Whole flock gone in 2 weeks

Thank you! I will add some photos this afternoon. We saw a tiny part of the hardware cloth pulled up on one of the vents - maybe 3/4" so that may have been how it got in but the damage to the chickens was indicative of a larger animal. Heads/throats in tact, chests ripped open/eaten. We...

Whole flock gone in 2 weeks

It's a long, sad story but it started when I let them out to range and the door to the run blew shut so they didn't go in at night like they normally do. I rounded up as many as I could find in the dark (4 out of 7) and the next morning one was killed in the run. From then on we made changes...

Whole flock gone in 2 weeks

Just so sad, once a predator catches wind that the chickens are there they make short work of the whole flock. We had a beautiful roo and 6 lovely hens. Still not sure what got them or how. Work begins this week on rebuilding/securing the coop and run again. It's just so frustrating when you've...

New Chickity Chicken Mama from MD!

An update - we got rid of our last roo a few weeks ago. He was attacking everyone and just too aggressive in general. Shortly after he was gone, we lost half the flock; the two ducks were killed/eaten by something, along with a silkie and a bantam hen. Still not sure what or how it...

    Add hay/straw to run?

Our chickens have devoured every ounce of grass in their run. I let them out to free range on occasion so that they have access to grass/bugs, but wondering if we should be adding something to the run so it's not just a pile of dirt? When it rains it's mud-central and our ducks and silkies turn...

New Chickity Chicken Mama from MD!

Thank you so much for the welcome and good advice! I didn't know that about the 10:1 ratio, that's good to know. We mainly meant to keep the roo for flock protection, but I think they may be all right on their own. I let them out sometimes when the weather is nice to free range, and we've...

New Chickity Chicken Mama from MD!

Thank you kindly for the warm welcome! I was reading another thread about aggressive chickens, and I have to agree with you - they need to go. While I think it would be fun to have some chicks, it may not be worth the hassle. I don't know where you all find nice roos! We had 3 and they were all...

New Chickity Chicken Mama from MD!

Hello everyone! I am a new backyard chicken owner - I have 1 roo, 3 hens, 4 silkies, and 2 peking ducks that we bought as babies in March. They are all grown up now and quite fun! We started with 3 roos, as we didn't know the sexes at chickdom, and we've narrowed down to the one. He is quite...
