I got screwed by them last year. They were supposed to send Swedish Flower Hens, but I ended up getting mostly Rhode Island Reds, a couple Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, and a Blue Bresse. All low quality birds. Looks like you got some of the same breeds I did.
I noticed one of my Swedish Flower Hen pullets has one white leg and one yellow leg. Just wondering if this happens sometimes in the breed or is she an anomaly? Genetically, how does this happen?
I’m sorry you had a bad experience as well. Maybe this place needs to be turned in for fraud or something. I’m also wondering how they’ve got a 4.8 star review on Google and a 1 star review on Yelp? 🧐
You’ve probably done nothing wrong. Pretty much all chickens carry coccidia. It gets spread around, but does not cause problems unless the levels get out of hand. The medicated starter is supposed to act as a preventive until immune systems are built up, but sometimes it’s just not enough...
The person that wrote that overview you linked is one of the first people that brought the vaulted skull issue to my attention. https://www.facebook.com/notes/swedish-flower-hen-purists/landrace-vs-selective-breeding/210460850844378/
Please don't assume. It's not just by THIS experience. I have spoken with multiple long time Swedish Flower Hen breeders. They are the ones that had pointed it out and informed me of their vaulted skull deformity and why you don't breed crested SFHs together. I then researched further and found...
Great Pyrenees can be amazing poultry guardians, but most need a good amount of acreage. They love to patrol and can be escape artists. They often nap during the day, then come alive at night to keep watch. That goes for most LGD breeds.
It’s definitely not a myth. You’ve just been lucky to not get any vaulted skulls if you’re breeding crested to crested. I own two SFHs with this deformity. Heterozygous crested to heterozygous crested gives you a 25% shot at homozygous crested which is when you’ll get vaulted skulls. You simply...
Coccidiosis often comes when immune systems are compromised, such as in times of stress...a move out of the brooder, change in weather, new flock additions, etc. You can have the best, cleanliest environment and still have chicks and chickens come down with it. All chickens carry and spread...
