    Cocci, Corid and the flock

She died this morning. When I picked her up the first time I noticed her feeling bad I immediately felt how under weight she was. She was a former production bird so never would allow handling before. Her crop was basically empty, I didn't notice any kind of swelling. She just seemed to go down...

    Cocci, Corid and the flock

I noticed one of my older RIR hens hunched up and puffed out yesterday. Just standing in the run while everyone else ran around. Separated her out and tried giving her some scrambled egg with oatmeal (she ate a little bit) as well as water with oxytetracycline. I don't think she drank any of the...

    French Maran?

She does have the feathered feet, but haven't checked skin color. She is very docile to the point she sometimes gets picked on at "treat" times. The other thing she seems to prefer the nesting box for sleeping over the roost. Some of the Brahma's do as well.

    French Maran?

I was told she was a French Maran when I got her but have never gotten any "chocolate" brown eggs. A couple of brown with dark spots but not sure if they are hers. She may be passed her laying age but is still pretty.

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

I put a chunk of sod in a few days ago as some suggested. They LOVE it, pecking it and even sleeping on it. The Cross Links are getting so much bigger I'm going to have to move them into their own brooder soon. I'm thinking about getting one of those big melon boxes from the grocery store but...

How can you tell which hens are laying

We didn't get our coop and run completed until early fall last year so looked for full grown chickens. We bought 7 RIR at auction (I know, I'll never do that again), 1 French Maran, and 3 Dark Brahmas (+ a Roo) from other local backyard chicken keepers. I know the Braham's are laying as I get...

    New babies

Here is the full flock, 22 new birds in all. The Rock Cornish are supposed to attain full weight by 8-10 weeks so they wont be around all that long, but still going to need to expand the run space. I've been looking at the electric mesh fencing. Does anyone have any feedback to give regarding...

    New babies

Well the balance of the new flock arrived today. 10 Rock Cornish and 4 Buff Orpington. Moved them into the bigger brooder box and moved the food and water away from the light (thanks for the input). All seem to be doing fine, temp again averaging around 90 but they are up and all over the...

    New babies

Got the new babies yesterday, 4 Barred Rocks and 4 Dark Brahmas. We actually started last fall with fully grown birds 4 Dark Brahmas (1 Roo), 6 RIR, and 1 French Moran. All seem to be doing well, 2 cases of pasty butt but took care of that right away. Got ours from local feed store. This is my...

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

Production egg houses keep the lights on 24/7 to boost output, but I think the girls do better with a break. During the winter months I have a light on a timer to extend the "day" a bit and hopefully hold off molting, but still give them from 7pm - 5am dark time.
