    Flighty chickens and electrical netting

Just wanted to provide some updates. I have now staked down the entire fenced area with plastic stakes -- there is NO WAY any chicken is able to crawl underneath now. Yet, there have been 2 escapes in the past few weeks! So, my suspicion is that they are still somehow flying over. I'm...

    Flighty chickens and electrical netting

wamtazlady -- That's something that always confused me. I know that the bottom strand isn't electrified -- what prevents a predator from crawling underneath the bottom strand if it isn't electrified? Also, I assume you are using plastic stakes to pin the fence down (as opposed to metal) due to...

    Flighty chickens and electrical netting

I'm afraid my declaration of victory was premature. My chickens started escaping again a few weeks ago. I thought it was no big deal since I had only clipped the flight feathers on just one wing -- the solution would be to also clip the feathers on the other wing. So, I did that, and things...

Is it possible to have a hen that just will never lay?

Just wanted to follow-up here...5 months later (at about 11 months old), the hen that started this thread has started laying. Late-bloomer indeed. :-)

    Flighty chickens and electrical netting

I just wanted to follow-up and declare victory here. It looks like the feather-clipping was successful. Today is the 6th day with no escaping, which is a record. Thank you for all the helpful replies. One follow-up question -- do I need to keep an eye on things and clip these feathers again...

    Flighty chickens and electrical netting

Thank you for all the helpful replies. I just clipped the flight feathers of each of their left wings, and if that doesn't work, I will clip the right wings as well. I will let you all know if it works!

    Flighty chickens and electrical netting

Thanks to both of you for your very helpful replies. It seems likely that I will have to clip feathers. 2 questions: 1.) I know I could just Google it, but do you have any tried and true resources for how to do this? I've never done it before, so I don't want to mess anything up and hurt...

    Flighty chickens and electrical netting

A little background here...I had a small flock (4 chickens) that I used to let free-range, but 2 of them got picked off by predators, so now I have created a large run area using electric fencing for the remaining 2. However, I am now running into issues with these remaining 2 chickens. Let me...

Is it possible to have a hen that just will never lay?

Oh, absolutely...I didn't think you were being condescending...thanks for trying to help!

Is it possible to have a hen that just will never lay?

No, because I see the other one (the laying one), go into the next box early in the morning (while the other one hangs out on the grass), then I hear her skawk, and then I go out and collect the egg (and it is still warm). So the other one is definitely the layer. Also, I only get about 5 - 6...

Is it possible to have a hen that just will never lay?

Great thought, but that's definitely not the case. I knew I forgot something when I pointed out all the things that I knew people would ask! They aren't truly free range in that they don't have complete access to the whole yard. They are in a penned in area, and I know she/they can't escape...

Is it possible to have a hen that just will never lay?

I realize that this is a very common question on this forum, but I swear I am not just being impatient...I am legitimately seeking advice on whether folks thing something might be wrong. I have 4 hens (1 Production Red, 1 Black Austrolorpe, and 2 Golden Comets). The first two have been laying...

Thought hen was normal, but now has bubbly/foamy eye...

I just got back onto this BYC forum after a long hiatus as I didn't really have any questions, and realized that I never responded to this thread. Eggcessive, thank you so much for your advice -- I treated that bird with Tylan, and she immediately got better and started laying. I appreciate it.

Thought hen was normal, but now has bubbly/foamy eye...

Thanks a lot for your reply. From what I understand from the links you sent me, if she has MG and we inject her with Tylan 50, it will treat the symptoms but she will still carry MG and potentially have lower egg production (and potentially still be able to transmit to other or future birds in...

Thought hen was normal, but now has bubbly/foamy eye...

First off, I should point out that I'm a total beginner and just started raising chickens a month ago...so please forgive me in advance if I ask or say anything you find ridiculous in this thread. We have a Production Red Layer hen...she is about 20 - 22 weeks old...she lives in a spacious...
