    Sumatra Thread!

Ooh, maybe to could market that... a chicken feed that makes their feathers reflect light differently. I would give it a try!

    Dongxiang or Lushi

I got the picture above from the Facebook page of Cedar Crest farm and feed in Ohio. http://www.facebook.com/cedarcrestfarmohio/ They don't mention them on their main web page. I also noticed Graceful chickens no longer has their main web page, maybe they stopped raising chickens or something...

    Sumatra Thread!

That is sort of what I meant, but you said it much better than I did. The better point is not that to recreate them would be simply inconvenient, that it would actually be impossible! Yes. That is the great value of preserving such a primitive breed. They are like the toy box from which we...

    Sumatra Thread!

Good, I'm glad they are a more or less known quantity. It would be a shame to lose that fun gene, because then if you wanted it back you would have no choice but to outcross, and then try to restore good type all over again, fighting off all the horrible little recessive genes that pop up all...

    American Vorwerks

Hi there, I updated the main Vorwerk thread, but forgot to do the same with this thread. There is exciting news for this breed! In addition to the few unique bloodlines of true Vorwerks that are already being cultivated in the USA by Windfall, GabrielBane, JBJ Poultry, and The Hatching House...

    Sumatra Thread!

dhetzel: I love the idea of a sumatra that lays blue eggs, do you know of anybody else who has them too? Sumatras are already the coolest birds, and lately I keep coming across all these interesting variations that I never knew about. Blue eggs, fibromelanism, and even long-crowing sumatras...

You can get fibromelanosis, the blue egg gene, and a straight comb from crosses between Silverudd's Blue (AKA blue Isbar) and the Svart Hona. There is a breeder who sells them as "Swedish Blue Hens". I have also seen them called "Swedish Bluebars". I think it makes an attractive mix, though...

    Parrot Beak Aseel (PBA)

I have never heard of this breed, they are almost unreal looking! You can tell a lot of work went into their breeding. I wonder if they need to be fed differently due to the unusual parrot beak? I never stop being amazed by the genetic variations that are possible with chickens. Thank you for...

    The "Vorwerk" thread!

Hey I went on Greenfire's Facebook page, and good news, they are planning to offer Vorwerks! Also, I found this family farm in CT called The Hatching House where they are also available, so it looks like we will have a few different lines that we can work with, and we won't have to worry about...

    The "Vorwerk" thread!

Oh wow Windfall, I am so happy you have these birds, I don't know how I skipped over this thread until now! I hope it will be a good point of connection between those of us who want to keep and breed large fowl Vorwerks in our country. This breed is so worthy of being preserved and promoted...

    American Vorwerks

Me too! I am moving to a horse farm in Maryland this year, and my goal is to raise Vorwerks when I'm there. If you are lucky enough to obtain actual Vorwerks, you would be doing a great service by breeding them and providing them to others. Good luck to you!

    American Vorwerks

Ooooh! I had no idea this was going to be such an emotional roller coaster, LOL!

    American Vorwerks

Well dang, they won't even ship hatching eggs? That sucks, but Croamagna, I hope you do go for it. Such a practical AND attractive breed needs to be more widely known and available in this country. Without having kept them yet its hard to pass judgement, but from everything I've read so far...

    American Vorwerks

I glad you think so too! The pics I used were of a bresse roo and two orpington pullets, but they have a very similar look to Vorwerks. Here is a pic of the actual German Vorwerks from JBJ Poultry in Texas: I asked the man who owns them, Brian, if these are the true Large Fowl from Europe...

    American Vorwerks

Wow, I will have to ask them if those are the real deal, thanks!

    Black Copper Marans & More!

They sound beautiful, do you have any pictures? I am wondering if they might have some silkie in them, because beards are not one of the features of a pure marans, nor are black combs, but both of those things are the traits of the silkie breed. When silkies are crossed with other breeds, their...

    American Vorwerks

I believe the only thing we have in the US that is similar to the Vorwerk is the Golden Lakenvelder, correct? Nobody has ever tried to import any true Vorwerks? Because I was thinking about attempting to breed my own homemade Vorwerks using Buff Orpingtons and Blue Bresse. But I won't bother if...

    Magpie duck X silver appleyard

I think they would look something like a black Swedish duck, which is black with a white bib. Here is a page I found where this lady crossed a Magpie marked Ancona to a gold Harlequin (similar to Appleyard pattern) and got a bunch of babies that were bibbed like Swedish ducks. That is probably...

What is epigenetics? An easier to understand definition with illustration

I joined this forum just to say THANK YOU for sharing what you know about this subject! I do not have a scientific mind (more of an artist) but the epigenetic effect is fascinating, and I really want to know more about it!
