I had no idea the temperature was that low for development. I read a couple articles on the subject. I just sit mine inside my house, which is always warmer than that. Thanks for the info. I need a way to store eggs more effectively.
I don't worry about her being able to hatch. She is a proven broody who does well hatching. I have never heard of taking the eggs away until you think she has enough. I always let her decide. They just stop laying when she decides she has enough she wants to sit on.
I was concerned about moving...
I have a broody sitting on eggs. I don't mind her sitting, but I have another hen that insists on laying in the same nest box as my broody. I collect eggs once a day when I get home from work. If I mark my broody 's eggs so I know which ones are hers, can I still collect the other eggs to put in...
Thanks for all the responses. I think for now I will just do a rinse with bleach solution and then rinse with fresh water before filling the barrel back up again. That way the chickens won't be drinking additional chlorine, and I will feel better about any bacteria that may be growing in the...
I did read that article. I was just wanting to clarify if isaiah53 used the citric acid to activate it since they said I would need it, but the article says to not activate it with the citric acid, in which case I would not need it. Unless I read wrong...I will read over the link again.
I might have thought of my own solution. I could just take the drinker cups off so the chickens wouldn't have access to the water, and then run a bleach solution through the line followed by a rinse. After rinsing I could put the cups back on, and if any bleach was left over it would be diluted...
I am open to other suggestions. I don't believe it will kill me though. There is chlorine in water that I drink because I have municipal water at my house. I have worked in commercial broiler houses where I know they put household bleach in the water to disinfect the water lines. It's all...
I have been told you can put bleach or Apple cider vinegar in chickens water to clean and sanitize. I read the ACV is good for worm prevention as well. Does the bleach do anything for the chickens, or is it just to help keep the water clean?
What about amounts? I use a 55 gallon drum set 8...
I have a question. I am not sure where I should ask it, but I thought someone on here might know. How do you ship chicks? I am NPIP, so I can. I just don't know how to go about it. Where do you get your boxes? What do you put in the box? Where do you get the stuff you put in the box? Do you just...
That's what I was thinking. I sketched up some plans. I figure I will have a maximum of 40 roosters at any given time. More likely closer to 30. I was planning on making the roosting area and feed and water area 6 foot tall to be able to walk into. The rest I was going to make with 4 foot tall...
I have a lot of chickens. There are 15 coops plus a large grow out pen they move to after the brooder. Each coop is a different breed. I hatch a lot of chicks and sell them and I also sell hatching eggs. The problem I have right now is I want to keep more than will fit in my coops comfortably...
I am wanting to transition to brooding outside instead of indoors. I plan on making it basically the same as a normal coop and run, with a enclosed sheltered spot and a large run. I know some people use cinder blocks with light bulbs inside to keep water from freezing . I was thinking the same...
Thanks for all the input. The main thing I was worried about was the calcium. My layer is higher protein than my starter/grower. They are 22% and 18% respectively. What brands of flock raiser do y'all use?
I have been talking to people and doing some research. It seems that some feed layer from day one to everyone. Anyone have experience with this? What are your thoughts?
It sounds like I need to give fermented feed a try. I don't think they are wasting much. I use about 500# of feed a month. I will check around for a lower protein feed as well. Thanks
I have not decided yet on what exactly to sprout. The first thing that comes to mind would be wheat and rye. I know I can find those close to home.
Each coop gets a handful of scratch each day. Other than that, they eat their normal feed. I feel bad not beibg able to let them out more so I...
I have thought about fermenting feed, but that seems much more time consuming. I don't know if I have the time to do that with work and all my other projects. Right now I have 20 pound hanging feeders that I only have to fill every so often. I have around 80 chickens in 16 different coops...
Does anyone add things to their chickens feed to help with the feed bill? I am afraid if I tried to mix my own feed that I wouldn't get all the nutrients right. Right now I feed tucker milling company super lay. It is a 22% protein layer feed. I was wondering if there were some things I could...
