    Depression?

6 years this past Father's Day. Just amazes me when one reaches out for help, how long it actually takes to get in to talk to a professional.

    SCHOOL IS OUT

Our kids got put 2 half days after Memorial Day. It's going way to fast. Our 7th, 4th and 2nd grader start August 17th. Be here before they know it. I know on that day, the car door will slam closed and I will be screaming "Hello summer"! Oh is that bad ;).

AAHHhhhh 40" Black snake in nesting box!!

Mosquito's, house flies and "palmetto bugs" are pests. I really cannot blame these snakes that want a free meal. I will try anything and everything before they get offed. The black snakes are really a benefit to have around. I live in the South, we had a very mild winter that has affected the...

AAHHhhhh 40" Black snake in nesting box!!

The family and I have been traveling. Talked with my neighbor that has been looking after the girls..... Yesterday one of the perps was back. Apparently with what looked like one egg in his digestive tract and one in mouth. I was told of a battle that had taken place. My neighbor ultimately...

After refrigeratoring eggs with bllom still intact

When I collect eggs I leave them out. My wife has a hard time with that after being taught to refrigerate store bought eggs all her life. Thank you for your quick responses!

After refrigeratoring eggs with bllom still intact

We refrigerated 2 doz. eggs laid this past week. The bloom has not been washed off. I would like to transport at room temperature then store at room temperature. How long will the eggs last once refrigerated then not? I used the search here, but came up empty. Hope to hear from you eggsperts :)

AAHHhhhh 40" Black snake in nesting box!!

Happy to report back cacknballs, that none of the perps have been sighted day/night since the snakes learned about gravity :). I am hopeful that atleast those 3 will not be returning.

    Breaking a broody w/pics

Like yourself Amanda I am leaving on a trip as well. Our broody spent 48 hours in a confined cage within the Chickmore Estate and morning pen. After the 48 hour she started to roost again. I don't believe she was eating/drinking quite the same as usual. I hot glued a carry out Chinese soup bowl...

Thank you Art for your input. May be tomorrow I will let her stretch her legs a bit. I will lock all the girls out while they do some afternoon foraging.

We have ceramic eggs in boxes as well. None of the snakes went for them. We have been down on egg production. But truly how many eggs can a small size snake consume?

    Breaking a broody w/pics

Hey Amanda, I am sorry to hear you are going through the same. I was kinda wondering to that should I allow my broody to open pasture with the rest of the girls at mid day or keep her in "jail". Our broody is coming up on 24 hours in solitaire. She hasn't laid an egg and doesn't look to happy...

    Texas Rat Snake

I am glad to read that I am not the only one that has had a surprise or 2 when collecting eggs. Our perps are harmless black snakes. Not to high jack thread, read my adventures here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/aahhhhhh-40-black-snake-in-nesting-box.1150392/

    Breaking a broody w/pics

So tonight begins with my first attempt at breaking one of our RIRs broody behavior. I have read up on this great forum how to achieve the most ethical way. I borrowed a good sized cat crate from my MIL. She has a bit of stretching room. I 1/4" hardwired the bottom. I elevated off the ground...

Blood on just laid egg shell (pic attached)

Is this something to worry about? The just over year old RIRs appear to be in good health. I searched here and nothing really came up like what I am inquiring about.

AAHHhhhh 40" Black snake in nesting box!!

I don't think these smaller blackies will try to eat one of our full grown RIRs. I am concerned as mentioned, 3 girls were roosting and 1 pacing. I now have a broody. She just hangs in coup and sits on the eggs or the fake eggs. Since this incident. Meal worms won't even get her off the best...
